ABUELITA Starts a Business Online

A Grandmother Welcomes You

Oi, my name is April Romo de Vivar and I'm called a clay folk artist because I'm self-taught and struggle to improve my artwork daily. I have been working in clay for almost twenty years now and it's about to stop being a hobby. With your help I could become a bona fide business and Fix My Car!!! Or, from my lips to Allah's ears, as one of my foreign students used to say, I will buy a newer one !?!?!

To see previously made artwork of mine and to see how it improved over time, please visit a web gallery (LINKED BELOW) made for me by my brother. My oldest son promises to get another site up for me before the year is out.

I mostly do custom orders now, though my work can still be found for sale in some Tucson stores. They are Que Bonita run by Carmen Pettiti, who was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Her shop sells large and small Mexican "talavera" ware, southwestern clothing, jewelry, paintings, angels, santos and storytellers from South America and ready made or custom made southwestern furniture. She personally visits Mexico and the artisans who make things for her store. She returns with truckloads of things and Does NOT overprice her things in the store. The quality is very high and the prices are very reasonable compared to other stores in town. Her store is glorious to walk into and you want to live there. Her phone number is 520-721-1998.

My artwork can also be found in the gift shop out at the 500 year old and newly restored, San Xavier Mission, on the Tohono O'Odham Indian Reservation, in Tucson, Arizona, run by Judy Parker, who feeds the city dogs abandoned out there and has my heart singing with her efforts. You could send her a check to help her to buy dog food to feed them. As far as I know, she does it all on her own. She has a heart as big as the West!!! The gift shop carries mostly religious artwork like angels and santos, but there are also handmade O'Odham (Papago) Indian baskets of bear grass and devils claw which sell for less at the Mission than Anywhere in the state. There are books on Arizona and the Mission and on saints. She carries glazed tiles with southwestern designs, t-shirts with southwestern designs and many other things. The mission's number is 520-294-2624 and then you push button number 2 to speak to the gift shop.

I think that I remember a saying from a poem, something about, " out where the smile lasts a little longer, out where the handshake's a little stronger, THAT'S where the West begins." It's true.

Living all Over Latin America

Dad first moved us out to Arizona and then proceeded to take us further away to Rio de Janeiro, Brasil ( the land of Carmen Miranda, carnaval, curvy mosaic sidewalks flowing along the beaches' edges, feijoada-black beans and rice, a President named Lula who used to be a shoe shine boy and a Governor of Rio who used to be a house maid- what a country!) and Tegucigalpa, Honduras ( the land of coffee and bananas, the Copan Ruins and deep undulating mountain ranges and BANDA BLANCA, a great dance band, not to mention the islands of Roatan and Guanaja where the rich go to hide and of President Ricardo Maduro, who struggles to end corruption within the country and is finding it to be a difficult job, indeed) and then to Guadalajara,Mexico (the land of Dos Equis, of great and magnificent artisans, MARIACHIS, Salvador Reyes, the greatest Mexican soccer player of the past century and some dear family of mine). There was a short stop living in D.C. ( a crossroads for all of us foreign travellers to stumble onto each other again and again) for awhile there between Honduras and Mexico. And, now that one of my Indian themed nativity scenes is in the permanent art collection of the National Cathedral there, over 35 years later, is a wonder to me !!

I hosted foreign students in my home until they could fly and be free on their own, which was similar to travel in exotic places for me. I finally only live with muchos dogs now. My grandchildren keep me rooted here in Arizona. And the dogs and the garden and the rest of my wonderful family keep me here and, ahem, the glorious weather ( I cry on winter vacations back east).
