About The Centre

The Centre for the Conservation of Specialized Species is a registered not-for-profit organization located on approximately 150 acres of land in Eastern Ontario Canada. Established in 1987, the Centre is dedicated to the captive propagation and reintroduction of Threatened and Endangered wildlife.

A 'specialized species' as we use this term, refers to any species of life, which through its evolutionary process, has become uniquely adapted to its particular environment, to the extent that it is extremely vulnerable to habitat destruction, and is therefore less likely to be able to adapt to man made changes to its natural environment.

At any given time the Centre is home to approximately 60 to 100 birds of prey from 17 different species, including Eagles, Owls, Hawks and Falcons, as well as many other species from across the animal kingdom, which are classified by CITES (The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) as Appendix I, II, and III, threatened and endangered.

The Centre also maintains colonies of fruit bats from Africa, Jamaica, and the Amazon River Basin, as well as insects and prosimians. For example, the Centre is currently the only facility in Canada to successfully maintain and propagate the lesser galago (Galago moholi).

The Centre provides educational demonstrations utilizing representatives of the species that have been propagated on the premises. To ensure that as many people benefit from these demonstrations as possible, they are presented for a nominal fee to any interested groups.

Since 1987 we have been doing this work at our own expense, and without fanfare or Government support. In the process we have also applied our personal savings whenever required.

The Centre for the Conservation of Specialized Species relies upon public and private donations to fund all of its conservation efforts. By supporting the Centre, you can be sure you are supporting a worthwhile cause. We do not pay salaries, support advertising campaigns, or expensive T.V. programs with your money. All funds received go directly towards the care and propagation of the animals that we work with.

We are currently working on our world wide web page, and when finished it will be available at http://www.conservationcentre.org

Why Conservation through Captive Propagation?

Once a species is routinely bred in captivity, it is no longer possible for it to become extinct. Hence, captive breeding projects function as conservation`s insurance policy by drastically reducing pressure on wild populations. They ensure the continued existence of any species utilized in such projects in the event their habitat is damaged or destroyed. Any knowledge gained in the captive propagation of a species can often be applied with minimal modification to any related species, thus increasing the wealth of knowledge available to dedicated professionals in this crucial field.

Our mission statement is to continually establish and maintain facilities to enable us to pioneer techniques for the propagation of specialized species, promote conservation of their habitat through presentation of educational programs, maintain a gene pool and breeding data bank of specialized species, and reintroduce progeny to their natural habitat wherever applicable.

For these reasons The Centre for the Conservation of Specialized Species was established. If you are interested in making a donation to the Centre, please contact us through our email address. It is available by requesting it from our eBay User ID.
