Who am I?
I started collecting U.S. coins about 20 years ago. I have rediscovered the hobby and have been collecting seriously and selling occasionally as my free time allows. I specifically collect and am interested in all types of US copper coinage. Most specifically Two Cent Pieces. I am especially interested in repunched date varieties and tougher date two cent pieces.

I am very serious about promoting this hobby to the youth of today. I know that this hobby can bring attention to detail and a sense of accomplishment to almost any young individual. I also know that without our youth of today becoming involved in this and other hobbies there is a very real chance that the hobby could suffer or completely disolve due to lack of interest.

A Word About Sales Tax Tokens

The sales tax token was born from ideas that originated well before WW-I, but did not become a reality until much later. In 1933 the state of Illinois felt the first stirrings as local entities and merchants issued sales tax tokens in denominations of 1/4 cent - or 2 1/2 mills. The mills were used to collect the fractions of a cent on items sold.

Merchants had to pay sales tax to the state on the total amount of sales made by the merchant during each days sales. So you can imagine that if the sales tax rate is 3% and a child buys a 10c piece of candy there is no way to collect the three-tenths of one cent. If you rounded down that meant that the merchant could not collect anything for the tax. You can see that if the merchant sold 100 pieces of candy he was loosing 30 cents a day in tax revenues to the state, so the token was born. This allowed the merchant to take 11 cents for the candy and give change back in tokens or mills. The next time you wanted to buy a candy you could present the merchant with the 10c and a token and complete the obligation. This allowed the merchant to collect the sales tax on each transaction.

Most state issued sales tax tokens were issued in 1935 and were used all the way into the early 1960's in a couple of cases. The tokens were made from fiber, cardboard, plastic, zinc, copper, brass, aluminum and even wood! Many of the tokens are very common but there are some that are very scarce. The American Tax Token Society was formed to bring together collectors of these tokens.

There are over 500 different sales tax tokens that can be collected from 13 commonly issued states. There is anti-sales tax token memorabilia from many other states to collect also. Most tokens are inexpensive and not easy to come by even though they are relatively cheap considering their rarity. This allows almost anyone of any budget to collect sales tax tokens without loosing their wallet or their interest. If you would like more information please let me know and I would be happy to answer your questions.

I have the largest inventory of sales tax tokens that I am aware of in the world. I have also established a complete online price guide for most issues. There are links to join the American Tax Token Society, which I am the current Editor for their newsletter and a life member. There are also links to online chat groups and discussion boards for sales tax tokens. You can visit this page by visiting Online Sales Tax Token Encyclopedia and Catalog

Thanks for bending an ear and as always happy collecting.

Bob
