DESERT HAVEN ANIMAL REFUGE
You are visiting the auctions of our Sierra County Humane Society located in Truth or Consequences, NM, a little town between Albuquerque and Las Cruces. Sierra County is located in the heart of the desert and boasts a total of 15,000 permanent residents. Throughout the summer, the nearby lake at Elephant Butte attracts literally hundreds of thousands of vacationers from Memorial Day through Labor Day. In winter, the area swells with visitors who come year after year for several months to take advantage of the mild climate.
WHO WE ARE & WHAT WE DO
Our programs, tailored to the needs of our fluctuating population and to its diversity, are as follows: Volunteer Foster Animal Program, Pet Referral, Spay-Neuter, Spay-a-Stray, Pet Therapy and Save-a-pet. We also subscribe over 750 elementary students each year to "Kind News", an award winning monthly newspaper which fosters in young people a respect for all living creatures and the environment. To help defray the large number of pets that are euthanized at the local animal shelter, our Society is in the process of developing a 5 acre property, which it acquired in 1999, into a "Desert Haven" Animal Refuge. This is scheduled to open soon. On that same property, the "Rainbow Bridge" Pet Cemetery and Memorial Garden will officially opened in the Fall of 2000. We are always seeking funding to continue our services. We are all volunteers, from the office staff to the refuge work crew. We receive no funding from any government agency, either local or otherwise. Our on-line auction site is intended to help us meet our financial needs so we can continue to provide pet related services to a population that continues to grow. We survive through private as well as corporate donations and a lot of hard work. All contributions are welcome no matter how small. Our Society is a non-profit, 501-c-3 organization, and all donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
