Resume * Business owner since age eight. Businesses: too numerous to list. * Harvard drop-out. Great school, but not for anyone with entreprenurial wanderlust (a mild form of ADHD). Proud to be an alum, but regret I stayed too long. * Coin dealer since 1968 -- co-owner of Heritage Auction Galleries, world's largest numismatic firm. Also the world's third largest auction house, and by far the largest auction house founded in America, with 450,000+ online registered bidder-members at HA.com, and over $700 million in annual sales. If you collect coins or currency, or have a collection to sell, there's no better company to deal with. * Heritage also buys, sells and auctions comic books, comic art and related memorabilia, movie posters, character toys, Hollywood/music/political/celebrity memorabilia, sports collectibles, autographs, illustration art, decorative arts, Americana, militaria, antiques and fine paintings, natural history, space memorabilia, photography, jewelry, Pre-Columbian, Native and Tribal art, and sculpture. (To sign up for email notifications of auctions and special offers, please visit the HA.com link under favorite links.) *If you are not already an HA.com member, you can join using my promo code JHE203841, and you'll also get a complimentary book or auction catalog. * If you are a collector of ANYTHING, please take our Heritage Auctions survey at HA.com. You could win $1000 and/or receive free auction catalogs in your areas of interest. * Also, please read my three The Intelligent Collector columns on the site. * Part-time investor/venture capitalist. * Happily married since 1984. We're both sleep deprived, though. Gayle and I have two sons born in 1991 and 1995. * Wrote two science fiction novels, The Truth Machine (optioned to be a Warner Bros. and Lion's Gate movie) and The First Immortal (optioned as a miniseries by Hallmark Hall of Fame), published in 1996 and 1997 respectively, plus a book on coin grading. Please check them out on Amazon.com, or download them free in MS Word at the links provided below in the Favorite Links section. * I donate all book royalties to charity -- mostly health- and education-related, or disaster relief -- so if you buy one of my books, you'll be helping out a great cause. * Please check out, in Favorite Links below, The Collector's Handbook, which I co-authored. Deals with taxes, estate planning, and other investment issues and pitfalls that affect all collectors, not just coin hobbyists. * My wife Gayle and I are rabid collectors, with somewhat eclectic taste. To see some of our collections, please visit jhalpe.com. * If you buy a lot on eBay, try GavelSnipe, the only truly free automated last-minute bidding agent.
* MAD Magazines and other Alfred E Newman stuff. If you're a baby boomer, go buy yourself a copy of Completely Mad by Maria Reidelbach, on special at BudPlant.com. You'll love it! * E.C. Comics: Tales from the Crypt, Haunt of Fear, etc. Ever read any? Best comic books ever published, IMHO. (Also historically important: M C Gaines actually invented comic books.) * Comic book fanzines from the 1960s. (I used to publish my own "crud-zines" when I was 10-12 years old -- they now go for $50-100@ on eBay. Who'da thunk?) * Original EC comic art, plus any comic book art by Robert Crumb, Frank Frazetta and Simon Bisley. * Maxfield Parrish originals and vintage prints, posters, books, etc. * Harriett Whitney Frishmuth sculptures * Mueller Freres art glass. Also Argy-Rousseau, Lalique, Tiffany, Daum, Galle, Loetz, etc.
