sehnsucht ~ a few of my affinities
i share a birthday with robert murray m'cheyne and j. hudson taylor. i'm an MA theology student interested in Christology, africa, europe, linguistics and languages (greek, hebrew, french, german), books, four-leaf clovers, missiology, music boxes, go-karts, sandals, pottery, philosophy, hymnology, apologetics, photography, art, riding horses among aspen trees and columbines, skiing, and juggling (i'm not very good yet). i love yearbooks, rain, a good zoo, cornfields, lilacs, birches, scary roller-coasters, kites, bike rides in the country, empty chapels, little women (i'm jo!), sixlets, tulips, poetry, and the sky.
  • when once you have tasted flight, you will ever walk the earth with your eyes turned upward; for there you have been, and there you will always be. ~ leonardo davinci

  • definition of beauty: bare branches against stars. ~ sheldon vanauken

  • the sky is one of the principal elements in any landscape. ~ c.s. lewis
thoughts on short-lived things vs. long-lasting investments
i love the opportunities eBay affords us to search for very specific treasures. but i also love the reminder in the Bible, in matthew 13.44, that there are things (not on earth) of much greater consequence. "the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field." as transient creatures with eternal souls, we certainly should consider our futures more than we hold to our presents. truly, as jim elliot said, "he is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." hudson taylor spoke also of what he called "the exchanged life." robert m'cheyne said: "believers should sit loose to everything here. believers should look on everything in the light of eternity. value nothing any more than you will do then. sit loose to the objects, griefs, joys, occupations of this world; for you must soon change them for eternal realities." the most important thing in life is "buying the right field."
