I was born in Nebraska and lived
many years in California and in Texas.
I served for 4 years in the US Navy during WWII, including 3 years in
the Pacific Theater of War with the Fleet, aboard the USS Hyperion
(AK 107).
The Hyperion steamed some 75,225 nautical miles, carried 150,000
tons of cargo, transported over 1,000 passengers, made 62 voyages to 29
islands and 37 ports, crossed the equator 6 times and the international
date line 4 times (I celebrated 2 Fourths of July in 1944!) and went to
such ports as Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides, Solomon Islands, Emirau Island
in the Bismarcks, Guadalcanal, New Zealand, Leyte Gulf-Philippines, Nounea,
New Caledonia, Okinawa, San Diego, San Francisco, Panama Canal, and Norfolk,
Virginia.
In the fall of 1944, I fought in the Battle of Leyte Gulf (one of the
greatest naval engagements of all time), where we went to general quarters
87 times, fought off 37 Japanese air attacks, and splashed 2 enemy planes.
Then we went on to Okinawa (still the scene of bloody fighting in
April 1945), fought in the battles of Naha and Shuri, and survived countless
kamikaze attacks (we were anchored less than 500 yards from the
USS New Mexico when two suicide planes damaged the battleship on
May 12, 1945 ).
I also took part in the 4th and 5th Atomic Bomb Tests at Bikini Atoll
in 1946.
Later, I worked many years in the real estate and mortgage industries
in California and more than 20 years in the mobile and modular home
industries.
I am now semi-retired and living in the Republic of Panama and Miami,
Florida. |
