I am a fan of "America's Least Expensive Collector Car" The Chevrolet Corvair. Some of my earliest car related memories were of riding in a white 1964 500 sedan. Not only is the Corvair America's Least Expensive Collector Car, it is also one of the most supported. Corvair owners and fans are some of the greatest people you will ever meet. Corsa, the Corvair Society of America, is a tremendous club with local chapters almost everywhere. From the beginning, Corvairs were different, unlike any car made in America, Corvair people are different as well.
I am currently restoring a 1966 Monza Convertible purchased on E-Bay. It came off the line in Los Angeles as a Regal Red, Bright Red interior, 95 horse, powerglide. Along the way it had a poor repaint or two, Aztec Bronze seats, and a right side door installed and some very poor minor body work on the rear corners. Its previous owner had new floors, some fender patch panels and a cowl, all from Clarks, welded in. An "Offy" aluminum deep sump oil pan and a new Clarks exhaust were installed. The car was on Long Island and the rust was extensive, every chrome surface was pitted. All that rust is now gone. The car was running but the brakes were scary. The car was still quite a way from daily driver and the list of things needed was extensive. The previous owner decided a more completed car was better suited to his tastes and listed this one on E-Bay. The car is solid, and the body is now almost done. The brakes were amazingly bad, leaking wheel cylinders and the hardware springs were BACKWARD, which did not allowing the shoes to adjust at all up front. The emergency brake return springs were broken, the only way to get the emergency brake to release was to put the car in reverse and give it gas. The brakes were replaced, new flex and steel lines, new wheel cylinders, new shoes, new springs and hardware, new emergency brake release springs, drums resurfaced and repainted. Shocks up front were leaking and the right side had incorrect, and much too thin, bolt, so the car clunked over every bump. New Clark's shocks and bushings installed up front. Car has been aligned, and now out handles most modern cars. Nothing drives like a Corvair. New turn signal flasher, battery, thermostat bellows, dash lights, fuel pump, filters, installed. Lots of new trim and moldings just waiting for car to be painted to be installed. Dash was stripped painted correct gloss, see pics. Windshield re-installed. Installed complete new heater system, high output blower, all new hoses, stainless steel clamps, from Clark's. New rear seat heater door. New convertible top weatherstrips, side glass weatherstrips, a-pillar weatherstrips. Correct tailights, correct side mirror, new exterior door handles, window cranks and interior handles. New performance 205x60 15 inch tires on Chevy Rally Wheels. Once body is done uphostery will be redone in correct color, and pattern, door panels, seats, all from Clarks. Already have installed repo sills, newly refinished kick panels, and some trim. Installed chrome outside trim pieces on inside of the bucket seats as well, replacing the painted pieces and plastic covers. Entire floor, rockers, trunk bottom painted Por-15 and 2 coats black semi-gloss topcoat, both sides. New Clark's carpet installed. Installed day/night mirror, correct wiper blades, correct year horn cap, winter summer cover, Clark's Aluminum powerglide pan, 12 plate oil cooler, new viton seals, and many more odds and ends acquired here on e-bay. New retro stereo, antenna and speakers installed. Feel free to contact me with questions or comments. Air Cooled Forever!
