Pierce, Idaho

Pierce is a small, rural town of 650 in North Central Idaho, ten miles from where the Nez Perce met Lewis & Clark after their painstaking trip over the Bitterroot Mountains. It is Idaho's oldest town, named after Captain E.D. Pierce, who led a party of gold seekers into the area in 1860. Gold was discovered in the canal and over 6000 miners flooded into town. After the miners moved on to the next "gold rush" town, the 1890's discovery of "green gold" (timber) revived the town. For over 100 years, the local economy depended on the timber industry. In 2000, our lumber mill, the only manufacturing facility and main employer, closed down. As a result, many families are without work, and forced to either move or learn new skills. It is the desire of the PTC to help our residents compete in the new technological age and keep them working in the area.

Our Little Town

Through the receipt of a MIRA (Managing Information with Rural America) grant from the Kellogg Foundation in May of 1999, the Pierce Technology Center, Inc. was able to procure three personal computers, a color printer, scanner, and laminator. Since its origination, the Center has worked with many different organizations to create a place where the residents of Pierce can access computer technology, the Internet, and cost-effective computer courses.

The Center is most often utilized by individuals who wish to work independently. However, tutoring and scheduled computer classes are available from the volunteer trainers. To date, courses have been taught in:

• Basic Computing
• Word Processing
• Internet & Email
• Spreadsheets
• Digital Imaging
• Resumes and Job Searching
• File Management

In order to keep the classes affordable for all residents, the Center only charges $5 per course. These fees do not cover basic Internet expenses, so we ask for "rummage" donations to sell on eBay to avoid raising the course fees. The Center is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and donations are tax-deductible.

Why eBay?

The Chairperson of the PTC has been selling on eBay for over three years. So, when challenged with coming up with a fundraiser to help cover Internet expenses for the Center, the immediate response was to go to eBay. All items up for sale have been donated by local residents in response to the publicity of our third annual "Who Has the Best "Rummage" in Pierce?" Internet Auction Contest. The individual that has the top selling item this week will receive a portion of the total proceeds and dinner for two at the Timber Inn.
