GROOMING TIPS
If you live in a cold-weather climate, keeping your dog well-groomed is essential.
When the coat is healthy and groomed, your dog will be better insulated against the elements. Here are some quick tips to keeping your dog in top shape this winter.
1. Regular brushing and bathing with a professional high-quality shampoo will remove dry hair, areas of matting, salt, and other outdoor elements that are harsh on your pet.
2. If you have a long-haired breed, be sure to trim the extra hair around the toes and foot pads. This aids in removing snow and ice after a trip outdoors.
3. If your dog comes inside and is wet from snow or rain, it is best to use a hair dryer or towel to quickly remove moisture.
4. Dry and clean your dog's paws when they come indoors. This will prevent the pads from cracking, which can be very painful. Applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly will help as well.
ARE YOU ALLERGIC?
Many breeds such as Lhasa Apsos, Shih-Tzus, and Maltese are purchased because their fur is considered to be hypoallergenic. However, when their coats are in a long natural state, they often become allergn-ridden dust collectors for allergic owners. These clients often want their pets "short, but not shaved". In other words, they want a "puppy cut."
This trim can most easily be achieved by using a snap-on comb. Snap-on combs work best when used over a #40 blade. The coat should be clean and totally free of mats for the best results. Each comb is numbered. The lower the comb number, the longer the coat length. The higher the comb number, the shorter the coat length. Working with the grain of the coat will achieve the smoothest appearance. Combs save on scissoring time, but never eliminate it. Some touchup work is always required. One of the cutest heads, often referred to as a "Benji" head, can also be done with snap-on combs. A "Benji" type head can also be achieved by skimming a #4 blade along the top for a shorter, tidier look. Remember that balance is important, so shortening the ears, either with a snap-on comb or a #4 blade, will keep the pet looking in proportion. Always use a #10 blade for the insides of ears to avoid injury!
How to Select the Right Comb or Brush
Coats come in a wide range of types and textures. Soft, silky, fine, dense, coarse, straight or curly hair varies immensely, even between pets of the same breed. The prepared groomer will have a variety of combs and brushes on hand to deal with so many kinds of coats— and will know how to use them properly.
For shorthaired breeds such as Beagles or Dalmatians, use a rubber brush or a bristle brush. Soft rubber bristles will pull out loose hair. A bristle brush should be fairly stiff and works best when used with the lie of the coat. Bristles move the oils from the skin to the hair shaft as you brush, leaving a shiny, smooth coat. A medium/fine comb will work like a comb used on your own hair, catching and pulling out the loose hair and dirt.
For long-haired breeds that need to be scissored, such as the Bichon Frise or a Kerry Blue Terrier, a slicker brush should be used to untangle and remove loose hair. Use a pin brush only if there are no mats. Depending on the hair type, choose a medium/coarse or coarse comb. If the pet is seriously matted, a mat comb or splitter may be needed. A curved slicker brush with stiff pins will untangle hair more effectively and will pull out more undercoat, but will also require more care in order to not brush-burn the pet.
For breeds with long silky coats, a slicker brush (or, if there are no mats, a pin brush) should be used, along with a medium/coarse or a coarse comb to check for any matting in the coat. For a serious matting problem, try a mat comb or a long pin rake.
For double-coated breeds, a number of different brushes can be used: a wire slicker to pull out the loose hair, a pin brush to untangle and smooth, or an undercoat rake or a mat comb to help thin out the undercoat. A moulting comb can also be used to remove loose hair and tidy the outer coat. Depending on the hair type, a medium/fine or a medium/coarse comb should also be used.
For sporting breeds such as Setters and Spaniels, a pin brush can be used to untangle slightly matted coats, and a wire pin slicker brush will remove loose, dead hair. A medium/coarse or coarse comb can be used to untangle and neaten the coat. If the coat is seriously matted or tangled, you may need to use a mat comb or a long pin rake.
How to Select the Right Pet Shampoo
Conditioning: Conditioning pet shampoos work like all-in-one shampoos for people: they eliminate the additional step of conditioning. Conditioning pet shampoo makes it relatively easy to comb through the pet’s coat after his bath.
Protein Pet Shampoos: To combat any dryness and promote body and fullness, use a protein shampoo. For a soothing and skin-friendly shampoo, try an oatmeal pet shampoo which will help to reduce itching. For the best therapeutic effect on itching, lather once, rinse, and lather again, leaving the oatmeal lather on for 5-10 minutes before rinsing.
Hypoallergenic Pet Shampoo: For pets with overly sensitive skin, choose a hypoallergenic shampoo that is free from soaps, perfumes, and dyes.
Medicated Pet Shampoos: Medicated shampoos are formulated to combat specific skin conditions. Does the pet have oily, seborrheic-type skin? A tar and sulfur shampoo will usually help this problem.
Color-enhancing Pet Shampoos: Color-enhancing shampoos work great for bringing out the natural color of the dog’s coat.
Puppy and Kitten Safe Shampoos: Because puppies and kittens tend to have sensitive skin, they require mild or gentle shampoos; harsh detergents can irritate their skin. When choosing a shampoo for cats and kittens, always read the label to be sure it is safe to be used on them. Cats and kittens have much more sensitive skin than dogs and puppies.
Pet Shampoos and Conditioners for Specific Coat Textures
By Teri DiMarino CMG, NCMG, CAH
Although a pet’s coat type is mainly a product of its genetic background, environment, and ongoing care, we in the pet styling industry have found that a coat’s natural texture and feel can be altered to a certain extent with the use of specific pet shampoos and conditioners. Knowing the proper products to use starts with determining what we want to accomplish through correction or change.
Human cosmetologists deal with either skin or hair. Pet stylists have the dilemma of dealing with both simultaneously! Attention must be given to each area individually without allowing one to adversely affect the other. Dry, damaged coats will benefit from a mild cleansing shampoo and a protein and emollient based conditioner.
Proteins can repair a damaged coat by helping to rebuild the cuticle of the hair shaft. An over oily coat will do well with a deep-cleansing shampoo, i.e. one with d-Limonene. Most medicated shampoos also contain deep-cleansing additives, such as salicylic acid, which will benefit both dry and oily skin conditions. When using a medicated shampoo, be sure to condition the dry coat ends after use. Mild shampoos containing additives such as oatmeal or tea tree oil can be used to soothe irritated skin. Some shampoos contain ingredients to aid in adding texture and to build up a soft coat, while certain conditioners contain humectants designed to "plump up" and add body to a thin coat. Silicones add slickness and shine while offering a dirt-repelling quality. Oils and emollients restore elasticity and prevent breakage. Additives, like color enhancers and optical brighteners, help round out the bill in coat restructuring products.
Conditioning sprays play an important role in continued coat maintenance and care both in the salon and at home. The use of a conditioning brush-out spray will not only speed up the brushing process but will also help eliminate static, preventing coat breakage. The wise professional educates her clientele on these home-grooming tips, since doing so will reduce matting and brush-out time. Less matting and a better conditioned coat means time saved in the grooming process.
The proper and continued use of the correct pet shampoos and conditioners in the salon and at home will help attain and maintain the ultimate goal, the beautifully groomed pet.

How to Remove Skunk Odor From Dogs
We are all familiar with the spring and summer results of inquisitive dogs investigating that unusual black and white striped kitty. Painfully so. It seems inevitable that encounters between skunks and pets will occur with pets on the losing end. Anyone who has had the misfortune of experiencing such an event knows how malodorous skunk scent can be. Quickly responding with effective treatments will help lessen the irritating and smelly effects of powerful skunk spray.
The offensive odor in skunk spray is caused by mercaptan which is a sulphur-containing organic compound found in some very nasty odors, including skunk, anal glands, and very old urine. (Its unpleasant and distinctive smell is put into natural gas, which is odorless itself, to help identify leaks.) This compound is sprayed onto the dog through the skunk's anal glands. Skunks are one of the few animals, along with some of the weasel family, that have voluntary control over these glands. This ability provides them with an effective defense system!
The deskunking process, no matter what you use, will be more effective the sooner you can get to the animal. If a customer calls you when you are not open, or you cannot take the dog, you can suggest a couple of things to do as a temporary stopgap. One, you can have them rub baking soda into the coat in the area that the animal was sprayed. Two, try rubbing vinegar into the coat. Anything non-toxic that is at either end of the pH spectrum will help. (Baking soda is very alkaline, vinegar is very acidic.) When they get to the shop, sell them a small squeeze bottle of Skunk Off for future emergency use! Chances are, their dog will come in close contact with a skunk again.
Getting rid of skunk odor is a two step process: remove the odor-causing oils, then neutralize, or mask the scent. First, remove as much of the actual oils that the skunk sprayed onto the dog as possible. Apply some type of ophthalmic ointment or protectant such as Top Performance's Safe Eye to protect the dog's eyes during the deskunking process and also to soothe eyes that may have been irritated from skunk spray. If the customer has rubbed baking soda into the coat, some of these oils will have been absorbed already. In any case, removing the remaining oil is best done using a good quality shampoo with lots of surfactants which will lift dirt from the hair. Top Performance Pro Formula Degreaser Shampoo, TP961, or PurePet's D'Grease is ideal for this. Other popular and effective brands are Top Performance's Baking Soda Shampoo, PPP's Skunk Odor Shampoo, or Nilodor's Deodorizing shampoo.
In order to remove the skunk scent that may have permeated the dog's pores, open the dogs pores as much as possible by using water that is warmer than the tepid or lukewarm temperature normally recommended for dog bathing. As always, keep your hand in the water stream to ensure that it is not too warm for the dog's comfort. After all, the dog was more than likely full of adrenaline from excitement when the skunking occurred, opening the pores and allowing the scent to permeate deep within the skin. Make sure you let the customer know that no matter how good a job you do, when it is damp or raining out, the dog may still have some residual odor left due to the pores opening again. Any slight residual odor can be masked by a good quality pet cologne which the client can apply at home when needed. After rinsing, a second shampoo is recommended, especially on the areas that the skunk sprayed directly. You will know far too well exactly they are by the end of the bath, usually the face, neck, and shoulder area. Rinse well as usual.
Second, follow up with one of the many professional products available for removing skunk odor to neutralize, or counteract the odor-causing mercaptan still on the dog. Many professional groomers use and recommend Skunk Off. It is available in both a 3.75 ounce size for resale and a 32 ounce size for shop or kennel use. It may also be used on clothing, collars, etc, including any furniture the dog may have tried to use to wipe the stinging from his eyes! Skunk Off works by counteracting the skunk odor. It does so by bonding with the odor-causing organic material, creating a new, odor-free compound, effectively neutralizing the original odor. As an added service that will earn your customer's gratitude, offer to also treat the dog's collar and/or leash to remove any odor that may have been sprayed on during the skunk attack. Since most dogs get sprayed around the face, chances are the collar was also hit.
If you prefer, you can use many home remedies that have been popular from time to time. Tomato juice will work to some extent as it is acidic, but it does not do the best job. Also, it tends to stain light-colored coats. The most popular remedy is a mixture of a teaspoon of Dawn dishwashing liquid, a quart of 2% hydrogen peroxide, and a half cup of baking soda. Mix and shampoo, avoiding the eyes and nose. Although this antidote does work, it is EXTREMELY drying to the coat and skin. Although the dryness can be counteracted to some extent by using a good quality creme rinse that will replenish moisture, such as Top Performance's Silkote, it is not recommended to use conditioners during the deskunking process. Coating the skin and hair shaft will interfere with the action of the deskunking agents in Skunk Off and similar products, and will especially interfere with the efficacy of the home remedy as well. For better results, have the dog come in again in a week to ten days later for a conditioning treatment to counteract the dryness if this home remedy is used.
Of course, the best remedy for keeping dogs skunk odor-free is to prevent them from being sprayed in the first place. However, with skunk populations growing in both suburban and urban areas, chances are your clients will rely on you to return their odiferous pets back to their sweet-smelling selves.
