Keep your Ebay email address up to date and check your spam filter for missing emails!! Email is 'THE' mode of communication between trading partners - inaccurate addresses and spam filters are the most common way that transactions get difficult. Good communication is key for buyer and seller.
Read the WHOLE listing - when you bid/buy on ebay you entering into a contract! Notice what info is NOT in the listing that you need to make a good decision and ASK prior to committing! Ebay trading will teach you not to ASSUME faster than any other life experience!
Review quantity AND quality of feedback of potential trading partners! Both feedback received AND given is informative - character will be revealed and you can chose if you want to transact that way *before* you commit.

Winning an AUCTION that you really want...
If you're looking at auctions on ebay and not having much luck winning and don't yet understand how a proxy bid works - find out before you lose an item that you really want because of bid 'timing' rather than price. If you have a slow internet connection or are not available at the end of the auction when lots of bidding usually happens a 'proxy bid' can be there for you. Sometimes just the right size and item come along and you might not get a second chance. I get some very disappointed email from people who lost auctions not because the price was too high, but only because they missed the end and did not have a proxy bid in place. The difference between winning and losing is frequently very little money - just getting the bid IN.
When you bid with a proxy amount the bid price goes up ONLY enough to put your bid one increment higher than the highest current bidder and their proxy amount and up (at the most) to the maximum you set. So if you decide you would like to buy an item if it stays at or below $104 - then you enter that amount as your proxy bid. If the item has no bids yet and starts at $9.98 then your bid will be entered at $9.98 ONLY. BUT if someone bids on the same item your bid will increase to 'cover' theirs until/if someone else wants/bids the item over $104. If no one else bids - then you would pay $9.98 ONLY. But, if the bid price quickly escalates at auction end from 9.98 to $88, then you will still be the high bidder because your proxy bid covered the last minute bid 'snipers' and their automatic programmed bids thru high speed connections.
As a buyer proxy bidding works great (after evaluating the seller - see http://www.basestealer.com/shilling.html for great info on what to look for) for those who know what they want and how much they want to pay. If the item stays in the price range then you will win the auction - if it gets higher than a carefully considered high bid then.. o'well. No worrying about being there when the auction ends and fighting with a slow connection or ebay malfunction to get your bid in on time.
