Writer
& Web Designer
Hiya!!
I'm Sheri, a peripatetic (wandering) writer and website designer. After 16 years
as a Navy officer, I took early retirement to pursue my interests in the Internet,
with side forays into commercial butterfly farming and the textile arts. I have
a BS in Wildlife & Fisheries from Texas A&M, and an MS in Systems Technology (C4I)
from the Naval Postgraduate School. I'm a PADI scuba instructor, a quilt teacher,
an avid skier, and have solo'd in bugsmashers. I've also taught webdesign and computer
graphics. I've been fortunate enough to live in Paris, London, Italy and Japan,
and just about all over the USA. During the dot.com heyday, I left butterfly farming and spent a fascinating 14 months in
Information Security with Cisco Systems in San Jose, followed by 10 months working on a network
installation at Nine Mile Nuclear Plant in upstate New York. (?? Yes, I spent a winter on the Great Lakes. How do I get myself into these things??) After 9/11, I transitioned to the homeland defense arena in, of all places, New Jersey... and in Spring 2004 relocated (still in the same career field) to Maryland, where I've finally bought my first home!! It ain't the Pacific, so sunsets over the sea are definitely non-starters, but it's pleasant being near family and old friends... most especially because in March 2004 I adopted a toddler from China, and in February 2006 I brought home a little sister for her!!! I expect to be on the East Coast for a goodly while yet, before finally retiring to my beloved Carmel Valley where I intend to spend my remaining years puttering in the garden, raising butterflies, and periodically running off to China on humanitarian trips... in between eBaying, of course!
Antiques
& Ephemera
It's
all my parents' fault!! Daddy, a USAF pilot, was stationed in the Far East twice,
and my folks took us kids all over Asia on space-a flights. Their training in sidewalk
haggling was somewhat stellar, to say the least! I once spent an exhilarating but
exhausting 90 minutes in a thieves-alley shoe market in Naples, Italy, emerging
dazed and giddy from the fray with 9 pairs of pumps, 5 pairs of sandals, and 3 pairs
of boots, all finest Italian leather, and the total spent was less than $150.00!!
The most expensive pair of pumps was $6.25!
These
days I'm forever on the lookout to upgrade my personal collections with unique,
textural items with a sense of serenity and history. This makes life something of
a treasure hunt, which is a perfectly logical way of approaching such a potentially
serious matter !! Too, I'm as susceptible as the next person to 'auction fever'
and do rather frequently stray from my own interests when I see something one of
my friends or clients might especially enjoy. I'm particularly drawn to hand-worked
textiles such as quilts and embroidery, old prints, Asian art, porcelains, Victoriana,
fine furniture and oil paintings, and books... I have thousands of books... selling
on eBay supports my habits...
Oh,
and as for my userid? No, I'm not Wiccan. It's an affirmation of life: "Shhhh, it's
a kind of magic!" is a tag line from the film The Highlander, and also a
song by Queen, from the same album as Who Wants to Live Forever? and
Bohemian Rhapsody...
Thanks
for taking the time to rummage through my stash, and may Life, Love & Laughter be
yours!!
