Audio Recordings are the Heart of ARTCRAFT Music Rolls' celebrated Interpretive Arrangements since they are based upon "musical performance" and not sheet music notation standards. Good that many of the old rolls were, they didn't possess a simulation of 'keyboard attack' or 'graduated staccato' — just 2 of the many elements which are part of every ARTCRAFT arrangement. The absence of these "performance qualities" gives commercial rolls that droning or mechanical sound, when compared to live performances, audio or ARTCRAFT perforated rolls. Three Tandberg open reel recorders, one variable speed Sony-Marantz Cassette deck (which can be "tuned" to the 2 player grand pianos in the Studio) and a Tandberg Cassette deck — all under the auspices of remote control while Douglas Henderson operates one of the Leabarjans — play an important part in the creation of every Master Roll. 'Musical Analysis' on a measure-by-measure basis is possible with this unique method, and one which was developed over the course of 50 years, beginning with a "piano key" Wilcox-Gay Tape Recordio, a long-forgotten open reel model of the early 'Fifties.
If you have the opportunity to experience an ARTRCAFT Roll in performance, then you'll realize why it finally became necessary to clear out some space in our storage building ... vintage rolls which are good in their own right, many in storage for 40-plus years. Still, we thought the reader might enjoy seeing a glimpse, above, of the Interpretive Arranging method which separates ARTCRAFT releases from the 'products' of the past, fine that many of them were in their time.
