The picture that launched a hobby!
User Name: Busy-boy
And I sure am busy looking for bargains in "S" gauge railroad equipment, particularly American Models, S-Helper Service and American Flyer brand model trains. Also in this category are trains by Downs Model Railroads (now MMT), Des Plaines Hobbies (aka S-Scale America), Rex (now made by Putt), Ballston Locomotive Works, American Hi-Rail, Pacific Rail Shops and Crown Model Trains. There are even more manufacturers, some who make trains in multiple gauges, such as K-Line and Lionel who both manufacture in S-Scale. Ross Custom Switches just got into the act and MTH is making buildings and lineside accessories. "S" has never been bigger!
S-Gauge trains run on two rails, not three. They are bigger than HO but smaller than those Lionel 0 and 027 trains everyone remembers. The scale is 1/64 of reality (a 64 foot long boxcar would be one foot long in S). This translates to 3/16 of an inch to the foot. So if you want to know how high the doorway of your collectible Dept.56 ceramic house is in S scale, measure how many 16ths. it is and divide by 3. That's how many feet it would be in full size. Most of the Dept. 56 houses are in S-scale. (Except Snow Village which is closer to O-scale, 1/48 reality, 1/4" to the foot)
Yes, I do collect Dept. 56, too! My wife and I have a collection of Snow Village, Christmas in the City, and North Pole. We also have a penchant for Hallmark ornaments, particularly "Frosty Friends." I am still in the market for Frosty Friends #1, "Cool Yule", and for the first few pieces in Christmas in the City: The Brownstones, the Theater and the Cathedral.
If you have these or any items in S-Gauge, please contact me at my e-mail address for a straight forward appraisal or just some conversation. I am always interested in talking about trains!
Selling, the Hardest Job
My wife says I never sell anything, I only buy! This is true of most collectors, but my house is becoming a warehouse, so some stuff has to go. Look for my auctions in toy trains, of course, but also in railroadiana and general merchandise, including computer and video equipment and auto parts.
