May 5th, 2,000 Kid's Day on Capitol Hill was awesome! You can read the speeches given by visiting the website for the National Coalition for the Homeless. Their link is listed below. This event brought together school-age children (homeless and non-homeless) and Members of Congress to discuss the problem of homelessness and the ways in which schools, students, communities, and Congress can help address it. Y2K Jacob and Millennium Myrtle will keep you up to date with news about this important and historical event. STAY tuned for some very exciting auctions coming in order to benefit the homeless and commemorate "Kid's Day on Capitol Hill".
I am so excited that you stopped by to visit with us! The reason for this page is to bring about a new awareness of the problem of homelessness in this country. Did you know that the average age of the homeless person in America is, nine years old. NINE...Can you stand it! These stats were released by the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) in December 1998. Together, we can and will solve this problem; you can help.
KidsLikeMe Can Project:
The KidsLikeME Can Project is very simple. The idea is that kids are powerful and important people and CAN make a difference in the lives of others. Jacob's goal is to get 300 schools to participate. All you have to do is get a large coffee can, make a label that reads, KidsLikeMe Can and ask each student if they can afford to participate, bring in ONE dollar. The money will be donated to programs and shelters to benefit homeless families and children. If you have a preference, for example you wish the money to go to a shelter that houses victims of domestic violence, or if you wish to donate to programs for education, only, the National Coalition for the Homeless can help furnish information about how to make those choices and donations. Dr. G.W. Fair, Dean of General Studies at UTD has agreed to handle donations for Texas schools. He will see to it that the money goes to a shelter or program in your area.
If you live outside of Texas, please check with the National Coalition for the Homeless for the best use of your donation in your local area. We are asking schools, church youth groups and any other group who wishes to participate to hop on board.
On this ONE website, eBay.com, there are 1.5 BILLION hits per month. Can you imagine the impact it would have on the plight of the homeless in America if even a fraction of those people got fired up about solving this problem? We live in the richest country in the world, yet we have children sleeping in cars and shelters, with little or no hope of getting to a place they can call home. This situation is completely unacceptable. We must not tolerate homelessness in America ONE minute longer!
Get motivated, visit the the National Coalition's Website, read and find out what you can do to help in your community. Contact the press, go to websites and request that they do more coverage to educate the public. The NCH is very prompt with receipts when you make donations. It is getting to be year end, a great time for a tax deductible donation.
