Cindy Alvarado was born in Austin, Texas, and her childhood was filled with animals. She began painting and drawing animals as soon as she could hold a pencil, and was especially fascinated by dogs and horses. When Cindy was twelve, she traveled to India with her mother, an anthropology professor, where she lived for two years. The amazing variety of wildlife and the the intricate beauty of Indian art was an inspiration to her. After her return to the United States, she completed her first commission for the president of the Racking Horse Association at only 16 years of age.
Cindy studied art at the University of Texas at Austin, and the realism and emotion in her artwork comes from observation as well as her feeling for animals. Her favorite medium is watercolor, although she also works in pen and ink and graphite. She has exhibited her artwork extensively and her paintings are in collections throughout the United States, as well as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, Japan, Scotland, and Tasmania. Cindy has won national awards at the Art Show at the Dog Show, an international juried show. She is a member of the Artists Registry at the AKC Museum of Dog, and one of her paintings is in the permanent collection of the AKC Museum of the Dog. She has also exhibited her work in juried shows at the William Kenton Gallery at the International Museum of the Horse in Kentucky Horse Park, the Raymond James Financial Associate Art Show, and the International Miniature Art Show (Miniature Art Society of Florida). Her work has been featured in Dog Fancy magazine, Dogs USA, Hawaii Magazine, Collie Cues magazine, and the Collie Review.
Cindy trained her first Collie in obedience when she was 10 years old and later went on to show several of her Collies and her English Cocker in obedience.
She began horseback riding when she was three years old on her uncle's ranch in Blossom, Texas and has owned several horses over the years.
