While there have been great advances in breast, lung, and prostate cancers, little progress has been made in the early diagnosis and treatment options for those stricken with a brain tumor. That's why, in 2008, Congress established May as the US National Brain Tumor Awareness month.

  • Meningiomas are the most common type of primary brain tumor, accounting for 34.4% of all such tumors. A primary brain tumor originates from the brain, spinal cord or associated tissues (called the central nervous system or CNS), while a secondary brain tumor arises from cancerous cells that have spread (metastasized) to the CNS from elsewhere in the body.
  • That's the MRI of my meningioma above, taken just before my craniotomy in 2007. It had been misdiagnosed as something else and grew so large that I almost died. Most of it was removed, but the residual could grow back. I had radiation in 2008 to reduce the chance of that happening. I survived, but the tumor, then the surgery, then the radiation all did permanent damage to my brain, and I'll have those deficits for the rest of my life.
  • Medical science does not yet know the cause of these tumors or how to stop them. More research must be done. As a brain tumor survivor myself, I will be doing my part to raise awareness this month by donating 50% of the proceeds of all my May auctions to the organization that has helped me and so many others afflicted with this disease.
