At this time I want to thank everyone who donated their items, money and time to help the shelter mentioned below. All items and money have helped people from the shelter find new homes in various cities across the country. The shelter is now closed thanks in part from your generous donations to help fellow Americans in need. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all who helped partake in this project.
Over the Labor Day weekend 2005, I visited with my in~laws and noticed an article in the paper about victims of Hurricane Katrina being housed in a shelter about 3 miles from where I am staying. Knowing that the city I was visiting is real small (population 748), I was curious as to how this was happening since I cant recall seeing anything like a shelter that way. What I found when I got there could be described as "An Angel's Paradise"...a place where hurricane victims could feel as close to normal as humanely possible. A bed to sleep in, a shower to get clean, a table to eat off of, books, games, snacks and even a swimming pool. Anything to get their mind off what they were going through beginning a week before. I met some of these people, listened to some of these people, talked a little bit to some of these people but mostly listened to them. I told them I was sorry they had to go through what they did but I was here for them and if they needed something to just ask and we would try our best to get it done. And when I left the shelter, then and only then...I cried. I cried because I am thankful that I have just about everything in life that I need. I cried because I know I helped fellow Americans when they needed it.
