Artist Clifton Karhu's Kyoto still exists, if you take the time to look........

I'm an American in Kyoto. I enjoy exploring, letting serendipity guide me as I wander down narrow streets; ten years here haven't put a dent in the number of places waiting to be discovered!
I'm an English teacher, and although I take great satisfaction and pleasure in that, I was craving a deeper connection with Kyoto, and wanted to interact with Japanese people in their language, on their terms, people who have no particular interest in studying English.
For the last 7 years I've been representing people here who make traditional goods, friends of friends and the like. Through that I've been able to learn more about the culture, the language and have some nice times over sake and sushi with some very kind, talented people.

Smiles galore and oh, the taste!

I've also been lucky enough to meet a smattering of the people who've found my offerings on the net when they come to see Kyoto. It's a treat to put a face to the name-as central as the computer's become to my life, nothing can take the place of a face to face!
I also enjoy sharing aspects of Japanese culture that don't often make headlines back home. More and more people here are becoming pet owners, and the pet business is booming. ARK(Animal Refuge Kansai) works to help homeless dogs and cats in Japan and educate people about pet ownership and animal welfare, and I've included their link to their English language website on this page.
