The South Georgia carver known for his primative sculptures of people and animals.The unique artist works are collected by hundreds in America and abroad. Listen now as he relates how it all began: Our story begins when I went to live in the Satilla river swamp. It was here I chose to live in a rustic river camp, accessable only by canoe in the wintertime. Occasional fishermen, my wife and pet cat, Tiger and curley lab Dixie, were my only companions. It was a curious act by the always sociable Dixie dog that led to my carving that first little character.Late one cold winter evening I had started a fire in the pot bellied stove in the lodge.Settling by the warm fire with a cup of coffee I felt pretty content. It was then that Dixie did a most curious thing ...walking over to the wood box he picked up a piece of tupelo wood in his teeth and then dropped it at my feet.Nothing else to do but...I picked up the stick of wood, Dixie just looked at me blinked his eyes and put his muzzle on his paws. Thinking to myself, dogs will sometimes do the strangest things. Chuckling to myself I got my pocketknife out and began to whittle on that stick. Well, it wasn't long before that stick began to take shape. Maybe because it was close to Christmas that the little fellow looked like Santa. Pausing only now and then to put another piece of wood on the fire and refill my coffee cup I carved away in the night. Enjoying this new found release time just did not exist.It must have been 2 or 3 hours later that I held the little fellow up, turned it around, over and ab out. Dixie too seemed to sense something special was happening. Getting up he came over and sniffed the little Santa the wrinkled up his brow and turned his head aside as if to say; well how about that.That was fun I said rubbing his head, i'm glad you suggested it.FACT: folks who are alone talk to dogs, trees and even themselves...my friend Mark Twain would say "good company". The little fellows bacame addictive why I must have carved a dozen over the next couple weeks. When the water went down we started having people stop in to spend the night naturally they saw my people and just had to have one. Got right popular thay did.My wife said they reminded her of the characters in French Impressionist paintings.Jokingly she referred to them as Spencers Satilla River Impressionist Sculpture.The name stuck. Interestingly, that painting period happens to be my favorite and probably influenced my carving style. In time as the popularity of the figures grew it was natural to call them SPENCERS IMPRESSIONIST COLLECTION. For you see they are my impression of life as reflected in all the wonderful, magical and timeless people I've known and admired.
