Exclusivity and realistic quality are our trade marks
Animal Art Unlimited employs five artists: Andrew Mbewe,
Donald Gwebu, Johan Matsane, Monday Thabethe and Zakhele Mnisi. From time to
time, visiting artists work at the studio: David Mudede and Lungile Gwebu. Jane Ngomane and
Phetheni Zungu help in the finishing and the polishing of the pieces produced at the studio.

Each artist is able to carve a number of different animal species and/or human busts (male and female). However we sculpt mainly African animals and especially elephants, rhinos and hippos although we also reproduce all the antelopes and the big "cats": lion, leopard and cheetah and the other "big 5", buffalo.
Every sculpture is carefully designed taking cognizance of the natural stance of the animal and the beauty of the natural log. Execution by each artist is done to painstakingly reproduce the exactitude of every detail such as wrinkles, contracting and pulling muscles, veins on the ears of the elephant, skeleton parts, tendons and skin texture.
Concentration and a high level of skills combine to generate some of the best animal sculptures
made on the African continent.
Our quality and exclusivity contribute to a highly valued art investment with good appreciation potential into the future.

The medium we use is leadwood, a hardwood indigenous to South Africa. Local people walk through the African bush and collect dead leadwood trees and branches. The trees have all died of natural causes such as lightning and damage by elephants. The wood lies on the ground for many years whilst natural weathering occurs through agents like rain, wind, insects, light and sun. The bark falls off and eventually reveals the parched "skeletons" of Africa. One big truck brings the collected raw material to the studio every two to three months. Leadwood is dark in colour and extremely hard, heavy and durable. The wood is so hard that Africans made blades for their hoes from it before metal became available. It is commonly used for sculpting in Southern Africa.
Animal Art Unlimited supplies the bulk of the leadwood carvings to the exclusive shops selling to overseas tourists visiting the private game lodges situated in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve. We also sell to a few other exclusive stores outside the game reserves but our sculptures and carvings are not found in other areas of South Africa. Many of these pieces find their way to the USA mainly but also to Europe.

We crate all the large pieces ourselves with pine, plywood and high density foam and ship via air freight to any destination in the world.
I look forward to help you choose and bring the most intricately detailed sculptures of wild African animals into your beautiful home. For you to treasure and keep for posterity together with other memories you might have of visits to our beloved continent...
Please visit us again soon as we plan to add more carvings in the next few days. Updated
