How To Care For Your LV: How to Clean, Pamper, and Protect your Investment
Brasso
Brasso is a wonderous liquid that is used to polish tarnished brass. The hard wear Louis Vuitton uses is polished brass (with the exception of the suhali line), and as you all know, brass will tarnish. Some people like when their brass is less shiny, they consider it a "patina" or an antique-ing of the brass. But for those of you who like your hard wear nice and shiny,
Brasso is AMAZING for cleaning dirty, tarnished brass.
Brasso is GREAT for speedy locks, and great for a quick polishing of the rest of the brass hard wear on your bag.
Those of you who buy vintage bags may find the brass has corroded and turned into an icky green color (note: never on bags that I sell - I use Brasso on all my bags prior to auctioning). Brasso will also work for that. It makes the brass shine like new!
To use:
I use q-tips for this.
Get some q-tips and dip one into the brasso canister. Blot the q-tip on a paper towel.
Now gently rub the brass hard wear in a circular motion with the q-tip. Let dry, it only takes about 1 minutes.
Then rub (hard) with a clean q-tip. Repeat this until the brass shines like new!
For the locks, take the lock off (if you have the keys that is!) and soak a small cloth (or paper towel) with the brasso.
SCRUB the lock. The paper towel or cloth will turn BLACK :). Rub with a clean paper towel/cloth, and then repeat.
Eventually the lock will be shinier than GOLD! You can buy brasso at your local grocery or drug store.
Sometimes you can find it on eBay, or you could buy online at Vermont Country Daystore.
Apple Leather Cleaner
ONLY for use on bags with a HEAVY patina. Apple leather cleaner is a harsh cleaner and not recomended for untreated or exotic leathers. Louis Vuitton leather is naked vachetta, meaning it's completely pure and untreated. Apple leather cleaner will stain new vachetta leather.
I use this on bags to clean for re-sale. Old speedies and Noe's (bags with dark brown or near-black handles) are definitely candidates for this!
To use:
Pour some leather cleaner onto a clean cloth and scrub, scrub, scrub leather with established patina to remove dirt and grime.
Again, this is NOT for new vachetta. You can also buy this online at
LeatherStuff.
Apple Gard
Water & Stain Repellent
Apple Gard
Water and Stain Repellant is exactly what it sounds like. It's an
aerosol spray that you spray on your bag to make the leather water and
stain repellant. That's right, no more water spots!!! This can be used on all leathers, and also works wonders on Chanel, Balenciaga, Gucci, and Marc Jacobs' leather.
To use:
Hold can AT LEAST 6 inches away and spray mist over bag in an
up and down motion. Spray all over, you can get it on the canvas, it'll
wipe right off. Be sure to get all the leather, including the leather
trim. ***When you first spray the bag, the leather will look MUCH
darker*** DO NOT WORRY! It'll lighten slowly but surely. Sometimes it'll
lighten up within 20 minutes, other times it'll be by the next day.
Sometimes Apple Garde will dry up with big yucky BLOTCHES on it. The
blotches WILL fade.
Below is a picture of what happened to my Speedy
after using Apple Garde. By the next day she was fine!
1 hr after treating speedy with spray The next day
After spraying:
Let bag dry. A lot of the spray on the canvas will
dry on its own. It'll take about 20 minutes for the leather to dry, then
you can wipe the remaining spray off of the canvas. At this point you
may want to give it a final spray. Spray a light mist over the
handles/straps for another 10 seconds, again, holding the can about 6
inches away from the bag. Let dry, wipe the canvas, and tah-dah!!! You
can also buy this product online at
LeatherStuff .
Apple Leather Care (conditioner)
Apple leather care lotion is a leather conditioner that you can use on naked vachetta leathers, even if the bag is brand new! Apple leather care lotion is very gentle; made for exotic and untreated leathers. The lotion will not enhance the patina process, and will not leave and marks or blotches. Some people suggest you use the leather care BEFORE spraying on the Apple Garde water and stain repellant. I've done it both ways: sprayed a brand new bag without using this conditioner and sprayed a bag after lotioning it and letting it dry. In my observations both worked the same and there was no difference.
Apple Leather Care is also a good cleaner for naked vachetta and other exotic leathers.
It smoothes out water stains, dirt, and grime without harming the leather.
To use:
Put some of the leather care liquid on a clean, dry cloth. Now rub allllllll over your handles/straps. You'll feel the leather get really supple and soft right away. You can either let it dry, and buff the remaining lotion off, or you can rub it in until it absorbs. I've done it both ways and have gotten the same results. Either way your leather will look cleaner, will feel softer, and will shine like new!
It will NOT darken the vachetta. You can buy this product at Burlington Coat Factory, or buy it online at
LeatherStuff .
Included in this site are a few tips on how to buy a real
Louis Vuitton bag on eBay (or on the internet in general). I've learned
mostly everything from experience, Vuitton employees, and lots and lots of
reading.
Does
he sell multiple Vuitton items for under the retail price, claiming them
authentic and brand new?
Do any of his bags have a tag with a little white
disc stamped with an "LV" on it?
STAY AWAY IF YOU ANSWERED "YES" TO ANY OF
THESE QUESTIONS.
Louis Vuitton does NOT sell wholesale, and if there's a
defect it's just simply destroyed - hence there ARE NO FACTORY SECONDS. Louis
Vuitton (in general) keeps all of their tags inside of the bag. The only
exceptions are with special order bags or sometimes items bought from
eluxury.
BUT there are NO WHITE DISCS hanging from the tags, EVER!
Quick Sure Signs that a bag is a big bad fake:
Note: These were all taken from an ebay auction, claiming the bag was
AUTHENTIC!
2 :: Know the Item ::
Buy a catalogue. Check out Eluxury or
Louis Vuitton. These are the only
certified Louis Vuitton sites. Compare the item you're looking at with that
of the real thing. All Louis Vuitton bags are meant to be mirror images of
each other. Memorize the placement of the monograms in the REAL item,
compare it to the auctioned item. If you can, check out the bag you want in
person at Saks, Neiman Marcus, or Louis Vuitton. If a monogram is misplaced
it's most likely not real, and if a seller tells you "not all bags are the
same, it depends on how the canvas is cut", RUN!
3 :: Educate Yourself ::
I suggest you invest in some recommended reading. There are tons of internet
sites that offer free tips on authenticating Louis Vuitton on EBay. Check
them out at the bottom of this page.
4 :: Know that you will never get a
brand new Louis Vuitton bag for much less than the retail price! ::
Take a Speedy 25 for example. The monogram speedy 25 retails for $565.00 plus tax in
the store. So all in all the bag will have a total price of a little more than $600.00.
Now let's say you bought this bag for $600.00 at Louis Vuitton and decided
you didn't want it a week later (and forgot you could bring it back for a
credit). So you decide to sell it on eBay. What would you put the starting
bid at? Would you put a reserve on it? Would you sell it for a final price
of $100.00? $200.00? $300.00? Even $400.00? Hell no!
If you paid $600.00 for
the bag why would you charge any less for it? Now logically speaking, it's
possible that bidders wouldn't want the bag at such a steep price. Bidders
(like me!) would say "I could get the real thing, guaranteed authentic, no
questions asked at the retailer for the same exact amount you're charging!
Why am I going to risk it buying it from you?" So even then, what would be
the least you'd sell it for? Probably $565.00 no tax - because that would be
a bargain for the buyer, and you'd be making most of your money back. The
lowest you'd probably sell it for would be $500.00, because even then you'd
be losing out on $100.00! Now I know there are a lot of super-clown fakes out
there that look almost identical to the real thing. These uber-fakes have
valid date codes, perfectly aligned monograms, and mirror-image interiors -
but you know how to tell if the bag you're looking at is an uber-fake or the
real thing? If they're selling it for more than $70.00 less than the retail
price brand new. ESPECIALLY if the price was set low with no reserve. Take a
pass on that one. Think about it this way, what does the seller have to gain
by selling a $600.00 bag for any less than what they paid for it?
Unless...it's a fake, and it really cost them $100.00 (if that) all said and
done. If it sounds too good to be true - it is! The only way to get a Louis
Vuitton bag for less than the retail price is if it's been used. Do not
waste your time looking through brand new "authentic" Louis Vuitton bags
trying to find a good deal. I CAN GUARANTEE YOU WON'T. No idiot is going to
buy a bag and sell it for hundreds of dollars less than what they paid for
it. Think about it - no Louis Vuitton customer is that stupid. Search for
used or vintage if you want an affordable authentic alternative..
5 :: The Words "Auth", "Authentic",
and "Guaranteed" Does Not Always Mean The Bag is The Real Deal ::
All of the following items were
taken directly off EBay. Note that none of them are authentic, even though
that 'word' appears in every listing title.
Item listing title: AUTHENTIC NEW MONOGRAM LOUIS VUITTON LV Speedy 30
Pleather and fake ID card. LV bags do not come with yellow cards like this -
counterfeiters call them "authentication cards" - they're fake - and a sure
sign that the item you're looking at is a counterfeiters creation. Also note the handles - they're too thick and too widely spread apart. Furthermpre, see that little "care booklet"? Those only come with limited edition lines, such as the cerises, cherry blossom, and graffiti. Monogram bags do not come with those!
Item listing title: Authentic Vuitton long Alma
WOW. This style doesn't exist. Yes, there were mini almas (though they looked MUCH better and more proportionate than this) sold at a few VIP events, but those bags are EXTREMELY rare, and sell with a hefty price tag. This seller guarantees authenticity! Tsk Tsk.
Item listing title: *Latest AUTH Louis Vuitton Cherry Hybrid Bag*
What the hell is a cherry hybrid? Would a Louis bag be named "Cherry hybrid
bag" - uh no, I think not! Just pitiful! Not to mention this style of bag was never made - and the cherries have these yucky zombie faces! Ew
What a disaster! Everything is fake. Keep an eye out for those ugly hang tags! LV doesn't do that! And see that extra long "pochette strap" - FAKE! LV does NOT include those with ANY bags - and additional straps cost an extra $100.00! Fake, fake, fake - the print and colors are off and bland as well.
Item listing title: Authentic Louis Vuitton White Murakami Speedy 30!
Low Reserve, Authenticity Guaranteed!
How tragic. This bag has already been bid up past $300.00, and it's terribly
fake. The seller even showcases the infamous fake yellow "authenticity
card"!! Jeez, I wish bidders would further educate themselves! This bag is
fake, fake, fake. Aside from the yellow card, the colors on the speedy are
off - look how pastel they look! Multicolor bags feature 38 different colors, and the colors are SHARP and BOLD. The shape is also off, the canvas is dull and inadequate. Awful!
Item listing title: AUTHENTIC LOUIS VUITTON BLACK MURAKAMI POUCHETTE
THERE ARE NO BOWS ON THE MULTICOLOR POCHETTES!" Then write "To boot the
colors are wrong and not enough, the bag is off in shape, these bags don't
come with additional gigantic straps, and the dustbag is completely fake"
Item listing title: Auth:Louis Vuitton Monogram Papillion 30 Vachetta bag ~
Trusted Power Seller~ 3 Day Auction Only!!
Obviously "trusted power seller" doesn't know how to spell the name of the
fake bag he's listing! Just LOOK at that terrible alignment!!! See how the LV monograms link up along the zipper to regular fleurs? That will NEVER happen on a real LV bag! The alignment is terrible! The interior of the papillon is canvas with NO
pockets and certainly NO patches. This seller has 387 feedback - how do they
get away with this? Just because they're a power seller does NOT mean
they're legit!
Item Listing Title: Authentic Louis Vuitton Ambre Bag
Fakeeeee - nice tag - the colors look god awful. ;)
6 :: Know the Fakes as well as you
know the Real. ::
Real or Fake Interior of a papillon 26?
The Real Interior should look like:
FAKE! Suede interior? Ugly pocket? I think not! Not to mention the title of this item is *Authentic* Louis Vuitton Papillon 26 and mini Papillon and the buy it now is at $300.00!
Real or Fake Louis
Vuitton Font?
FAKE!
Why you ask?
Compare it to font examples below, all taken from authentic pieces. Look
specifically at the "O" in the Louis. See the difference?! Font
identification is a VERY useful tool!
Real or Fake
interior of a Speedy (vintage or new)?
The Real Interior should look like:
Ew gross. Fake! Look at that monogram interior pocket!!!! Fake patch, fake
zipper - just fake...ew
Real or Fake Large
Noe?
The Real one should look like:
Fake! NO LUGGAGE TAG! Noe's do not come with a luggage tag.
Real or Fake Mini
Sac?
The Real one should look like:
If you guessed fake, pat yourself on the back! There's no such thing as a cerises mini sac!
The Hall Of Shame
Bags to laugh about
There are No Cerises Alma.
My
Main Message
If you've gotten this far I'm going to ask you to not buy
counterfeit items. Buying/selling counterfeit products indirectly funds
illegal activities such as terrorism and underground organized crime rings.
If you can't afford the real thing from the store indulge yourself in a
vintage or slightly used bag! For more documented information on the illegal
activities tied to counterfeiting click on the following link:
dontbuyfakes .
Not only are fake bags illegal, but they're s tacky! You may think nobody
can tell, but trust me - we're out there.
Even I can be
duped! My mother bought this bag in an Ebay auction. The seller used a BAIT
AND SWITCH scam. The pictures in the auction were of an authentic LV multicolor mini sac. This is what we received:
Yuck!!! We paid almost $200.00 for it. When it arrived,
it was easily identifiable as a fake. The seller no sooner had disappeared
off of Ebay. This $200.00 piece of garbage laid in my basement for a year.
Recently my love and I found it while cleaning...and got a little creative.
Please know, that no matter what ANYONE tells you,
fake bags are ILLEGAL. Here's an
article taken from the Daily News.
"Illegal counterfeits products made to look exactly like genuine
designer goods and sold at a fraction of the price and quality cost New
York City more than $1 billion in lost tax revenue last year, city
Controller William Thompson estimates.
Faced with such a huge deficit, a major crackdown on forgeries has pushed
many fake designer labels off the shelves.
But The News found several dealers are still connected to the illegal
trade, and complex networks have been organized to cover their tracks.
"Try one of the store owners on Broadway," said one designer-free
shopkeeper, a walkie-talkie already in his hands.
A salesman in that store told our reporter, "There are two women standing
outside Starbucks at Canal and Centre St. They might know."
The pair were easy to spot. One stood in a puffy jacket, hands in
pockets, not looking particularly friendly, chatting in Chinese to her
companion. They acted dumb at requests, offering an umbrella to keep off
the pouring rain, but nothing more.
But it took only a couple of minutes to gain their confidence.
A crumpled, laminated sheet of paper was pulled out of the puffy jacket
pocket and offered. It was covered with tiny pictures of Louis Vuitton
purses.
"Lots of Louis," she said. "You follow me?"
So began a dash through the maze of north Chinatown. The diminutive woman
marched through the rain, her companion crossing the street and
constantly watching for followers behind. At least one man, standing
scanning the foot traffic at a crossroads, nodded as they passed.
The guide led our reporter into a shopping mall passageway a few blocks
from Canal St., stopping by a door covered by metal pull-down shutters.
The shutters were rolled up, a door unlocked and, as it was locked again,
a room packed full of counterfeits mainly Louis Vuitton, Coach and
Christian Dior purses, along with DVDs of movies still selling out
theaters was exposed.
A replica Louis Vuitton purse was bought for $40. A real one would cost
$775.
It seems these well-hidden hauls of illegal products have become common.
"I was asking and asking for Gucci and Prada, and nobody knew anything,"
said Shelley Blair, 31, a tourist from Oklahoma City. "Then this woman
with a baby stepped forward and said, know where you can get some.'
She led me a few blocks away, unlocked this door and took me inside.
Somebody else locked the door behind me and said, Now you are safe.' The
room was full of bags.
"It was weird. I was following this woman and thinking, here is she
taking me?'"
Most Canal St. stores visited by The News last week claimed not to sell
gear bearing names of the biggest fashion houses even when a reporter
uttered a password sources said would open up a secret Aladdin's cave of
contraband.
But extended efforts showed the ease with which counterfeits still can be
found.
Despite protesting that the cheap, unnamed bags on display at a Canal St.
store were all that was stocked, two assistants were eventually persuaded
to nervously pull out discreet Louis Vuitton and Coach catalogues.
An ordered purse designed to look like a Coach and bought for $38,
compared with the $278 price tag for the genuine article appeared from
a back room, already packaged.
At another store, a vendor checked his empty shop for hidden customers
before peeling back an unknown brand name from a leather bag to show
Prada stamped proudly underneath.
But many sellers do seem genuinely designer free, including one who said,
"We don't sell any at all," a look of regret in her eye as she turned
away business.
Tim Trainer, president of the International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition,
said, "Forcing this gear out of public view is the first step in
drastically reducing the problem.
"I have seen this happen before in a place in Hong Kong. The authorities
put pressure on for two years and the whole thing was driven underground.
"Canal St. is still one of the worst places in the country for
counterfeits, but New York City, the police and the designer companies
have realized the extent of the problem, and they're taking huge steps to
crack down on it."
He said hefty fines and, in more serious cases, lengthy jail sentences
can be imposed for selling counterfeits which often funds other
criminal activity.
A spokeswoman for the Manhattan district attorney's office said, "We have
taken a lot of action, and it will continue.
"This is the result of months and months of work, which now appears to be
paying off."
Police declined to comment.
"Members of the public think they're doing nothing wrong when this
stuff's on show in the stores," Trainer said.
"When they have to go into locked back rooms, then they realize this is
something bad, that this is not a legal transaction and it's not safe.
Then the market severely declines."=
A middle-aged man carrying a plastic bag full of counterfeit purses bent
to whisper to a shop assistant as he left a Canal St. store with his wife
last week.
"Isn't this illegal?" he said.
"No, no, no," she replied. "Of course not."
