Polyphenol-Rich CHOCOLATE May Ease Chronic Fatigue Symptoms According To New Research

Natural Antioxidants, Carotenoids, Phytochemicals From High Cocoa CHOCOLATE Are Beneficial For Cardiovascular Health, Energy and Endurance...

Consumption of a flavanol-rich chocolate product may ease the symptoms of chronic fatigue, according to a new study by researchers from the University of Hull in England. Results of a small double-blind, randomized, pilot crossover study with ten individuals indicate that daily consumption of a high cocoa liquor-polyphenol rich chocolate significantly improved symptoms of chronic fatigue after eight weeks, compared with a cocoa liquor free-low polyphenol chocolate.

"As both types of chocolate were iso-calorific and had similar glycemic indices and loads, it is likely that the improvement was due to the high polyphenol content within the active chocolate, rather than a difference in of the micro or macronutrient the composition of the two chocolates," reported the researchers in Nutrition Journal. "The significance of the results is particularly surprising because of the small number of subjects in the study," they added.

Chronic fatigue has been associated with a range of biological systems amongst which oxidative stress is one of them. According to the Hull-based researchers, the benefits of chocolate may be due to the flavonoids protecting cells like neuronal cells from oxidative stress. They note however that additional studies need to explore this mechanism further.

Tasty Benefits From Cocoa The health benefits of polyphenols from cocoa have been gathering increasing column inches in the national media. To date studies have reported potential benefits for cardiovascular health, skin health, and even brain health.

Chocolate and cocoa are different however, and not interchangeable terms. According to a review published in the British Journal of Nutrition, "cocoa is the non-fat component of cocoa liquor (finely ground cocoa beans) which is used in chocolate making or as cocoa powder (commonly 12 per cent fat) for cooking and drinks.

"Cocoa liquor contains approximately 55 per cent cocoa butter and together this comprises cocoa solids, often referred to on chocolate packaging. Chocolate refers to the combination of cocoa, cocoa butter, sugar, etc. into a solid food product," added the reviewers.

The benefits of the bean are reported to revolve around the flavanols (also known as flavan-3-ols or catechins), and particularly the monomeric flavanol (-)epicatechin.

Study Details Six women and four men with an average age of 52 and chronic fatigue, as measured using the Chalder Fatigue Scale, were assigned to receive eight weeks of either the high or low chocolate, followed by two weeks of washout and cross over on to the other intervention.

Results showed a significant improvement in Chalder Fatigue Scale scores following the high polyphenol chocolate intervention, whereas a deterioration was observed in the low-polyphenol chocolate intervention.

"Since there was a consistent improvement of symptoms with high cocoa phenol chocolate and deterioration with iso-calorific chocolate, a placebo effect is unlikely," stated the researchers.

"Moreover, the taste panel of healthy people before the study could not differentiate the taste between high cocoa and iso-calorific chocolate.

"In summary, this study suggests that consuming high cocoa polyphenol rich chocolate 15g three times daily has a beneficial effect in improving fatigue and residual function in subjects with chronic fatigue syndrome over a period of 8 weeks compared to simulated iso-calorific cocoa mass free/ low polyphenol chocolate," they concluded.

New Harvard Study... Berry Compounds May Improve Blood Pressure. Antioxidants, Carotenoids, Phyto-Nutrients Are Beneficial For Supporting Cardiovascular Health, According To Important New Research Flavonoid compounds from blueberries and strawberries may reduce blood pressureand aid in the prevention of hypertension, suggest findings from a new Trans-Atlantic study.

Increased intakes of anthocyanins, mainly from blueberries and strawberries, were directly associated with a reduction in the risk of high blood pressure (hypertension)of up to 12 percent, according to a collaboration between scientists from the University of East Anglia (United Kingdom), Harvard School of Public Health, andHarvard Medical School.

High blood pressure (hypertension), defined as having a systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) greater than 140 and 90 mmHg; It is a major risk factor forcardiovascular disease (CVD).

The results are derived from data from over 150,000 health care professionals in the United States. The study is observational in nature, and the researchers stress that this does not prove that the compounds do reduce the risk of hypertension: The data does not necessarily prove causation.

"These findings warrant further investigation, including intervention studies designed to test optimal doses of anthocyanin rich foods for the prevention of hypertension and to underpin guidelines for the prevention and treatment of hypertension," write the researchers in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Study details

Harvard's researchers analyzed data from 133,914 women and 23,043 men. Intakes of flavonoids and the various subclasses were calculated using food frequency questionnaires performed every four years. Subjects were followed for an average of 14 years, during which time a total of 5629 and 29,018 cases of hypertension were documented in men and women, respectively.

After analyzing the numbers, the researchers found that the highest average intakes of anthocyanins (ranging from 16.2 to 21.0 milligrams per day) were associated with an 8 percent decrease in the risk of hypertension, while the benefits increased to a 12 percent reduction in risk when the analysis was limited to people over the age of 60, compared with the lowest average intakes, which ranged from 5.7 to 6.8.

No flavonoids were associated with hypertension, but the researchers did note that the compound "apigenin" was associated with a 5 percent reduction in risk, when comparing the highest with the lowest average intakes. Moreover, a 6 percent reduction in hypertension risk was observed for people over 60 with the highest average intakes of flavan-3-ol catechin, they added.

In terms of the whole foods, a significant 10 percent reduction in the risk of hypertension was observed in over 60 year old consuming more than one serving of blueberries per week, compared with people in the same age group consuming no blueberries.

"These data support the hypothesis that the antihypertensive bioactivity may be relevant to vasodilatory processes associated with specific flavonoid structural characteristics," wrote the researchers.

Structure is key

The researchers explained that there exist a huge variety of flavonoid structures, and that the potential blood pressure-lowering effects were likely to be limited to a small number of "structurally similar compounds such as the catechol and 4' hydroxy flavonoids".

"Our data suggested that several specific classes of flavonoids were associated with blood pressure reduction, specifically anthocyanins, which resulted in a 12 percent reduction in hypertension risk in multivariate analyses," wrote the researchers.

"These data are important because anthocyanins are present in commonly consumed fruit, such as blueberries, cranberries, and strawberries, which can be readily incorporated into the diet," they added.

Commenting on average portions in the diet, they noted that and average portion of blood orange juice, black currants, or blueberries contains in excess of 500 milligrams of anthocyanins.

"The underlying biological mechanisms by which flavonoids regulate blood pressure include the effects of flavonoids on vascular blood flow, vascular reactivity, and glucose uptake," wrote the researchers.

"Growing mechanistic evidence suggests that endothelial NO regulation rather than a general antioxidant effect (ie, direct radical scavenging) is a major target for these compounds, and emerging data suggests that eNOS and NADPH oxidase activity are crucial sites of action for many flavonoids," they added.

Tomato Juice Can Reduce Osteoporosis, Claims New Research

Naturally- Rich In Antioxidants,Carotenoids, Phytochemicals, The New Study Demonstrates Benefits For Supporting Bone And Joint Health...

Tomato juice can significantly increase the presence of cell- protecting antioxidants that help to fight against osteoporosis, according to new research. Reporting in Osteoporosis International, calcium researchers at the University of Toronto (UT) claim that 30mg of lycopene found in tomatoes, the equivalent to two glasses of tomato juice, is enough to help prevent the brittle-bone disease.

Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass, which leads to an increase risk of fractures, especially the hips, spine and wrists. An estimated 75 million people suffer from it in Europe, the US and Japan. Women are four times more likely to develop osteoporosis than men and previous research indicates that diabetes decreases bone turnover that is associated with impaired osteoblastic maturation and function. Boosting bone density in high-risk and post-menopausal women could ease the burden of osteoporosis.

Lycopenes - High Potency Antioxidant Power! Lycopene is the red pigment in tomatoes and several fruits. According to the University of Toronto scientists, it is a potent carotenoid, a group of naturally occurring pigments essential for plant growth with a high ability to quench singlet oxygen.

Due to this ability to decrease oxidative stress, lycopene has been associated with a decreased risk of chronic diseases.

According to the researchers, no intervention studies have been published demonstrating the effect of the antioxidant lycopene on bone, and that the objective of the study thus was to determine whether lycopene would act as an antioxidant to decrease oxidative stress parameters that result in decreased bone turnover markers.

Methodology and Evaluating Results Post-menopausal women aged 50 to 60 were restricted from consuming anything containing lycopene for a month. The participants were split into four groups over four months. Each group of participants either consumed a 15mg lycopene supplement, a glass of tomato juice naturally containing 15mg of lycopene, a gourmet Japanese tomato juice with 35mg of lycopene or a placebo.

Serum collected after the washout, 2 and 4 months of supplementation, was assayed for cross-linked aminoterminal N-telopeptide, carotenoid content, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), lipid, and protein oxidation. By the end of the initial lycopene-free month, in every participant, "There was an increased reobsorption of bone. In other words, within a month, the participants were more prone to the risk of osteoporosis," explained the researchers from Calcium Research Laboratory who conducted the study.

After four months, results showed that lycopene- supplementation had significantly increased serum lycopene compared to the placebo group. The lycopene groups had significantly increased antioxidant capacity, decreased oxidative stress parameters and decreased bone reobsorption markers.

The results of the study showed a significant increase in serum lycopene after supplementation with juice or lycopene capsules, which resulted in a decrease in the bone resorption marker NTx in postmenopausal women:

"This reduction in NTx may be due to the ability of the absorbed lycopene to reduce the oxidative stress parameters in these women. Our findings are the first to show that lycopene intervention, given in capsule or juice form, supplying at least 30 mg/day, may decrease the risk of osteoporosis by decreasing oxidative stress and bone resorption." concluded the researchers.

Vitamin D May Boost Urinary Tract Health According To New Study Research Demonstrates Specific Vitamins Recognized For Helping Support Immune System, Women's Health... Adequate vitamin D levels may boost the body's immune response and protect against urinary tract infections, says a new study from Sweden. Vitamin D supplementation was found to promote production of an anti-microbial peptide called cathelicidin in the urinary tract, thereby offering local and site-specific protection, according to findings published in Public Library of Science One (PLoS ONE.)

"This could make [25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25D3)] an effective and safe way of activating the endogenous antimicrobial response locally at the site of infection," wrote researchers from the Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. "Determining the vitamin D status of individuals with a history of UTI may be of importance to evaluate their ability to fend off intruding bacteria.

"Supplementation to restore proper vitamin D levels may therefore help preparing the bladder epithelium to mount a stronger and faster immune response once bacteria enter the bladder."

Vitamin D

Vitamin D refers to two biologically inactive precursors - D3, also known as cholecalciferol, and D2, also known as ergocalciferol. The former, produced in the skin on exposure to UVB radiation (290 to 320 nm), is said to be more bioactive.

Both D3 and D2 precursors are hydroxylated in the liver and kidneys to form 25- hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), the non-active 'storage' form, and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D), the biologically active form that is tightly controlled by the body.

While our bodies do manufacture vitamin D on exposure to sunshine, the levels in some northern countries are so weak during the winter months that our body makes no vitamin D at all, meaning that dietary supplements and fortified foods are seen by many as the best way to boost intakes of vitamin D.

And the science supports maintaining adequate levels, with vitamin D deficiency in adults reported to precipitate or exacerbate osteopenia, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, fractures, common cancers, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and cardiovascular diseases. There is also some evidence that the vitamin may reduce the incidence of several types of cancer and type-1 diabetes.

The new study indicates that the benefits of the sunshine vitamin may also extend to urinary tract health, a health category traditionally dominated by cranberry juice and extracts.

Study details

The Stockholm-based scientists analyzed vitamin D blood levels in 22 postmenopausal and six premenopausal Swedish women. An additional eight women with a median age of 62 were recruited to participate in a supplementation trial (2000 units per day of 25D3 for 12 weeks, Recip, Meda Pharmaceuticals). Five women completed the trial.

The Swedish researchers note that 1,25(OH)2D was measured in bladder cell cultures, which indicated that the cells of the bladder are capable of producing the active form of the vitamin.

Results from the supplementation trial showed that 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 was associated with an induction in the expression of cathelicidin when bladder biopsies were exposed to E. coli. No general induction of the antimicrobial peptide was observed during vitamin D supplementation, added the researchers.

"Here we show that oral 25D3 supplementation of healthy postmenopausal women prepares the bladder tissue to fight E. coli infection by increased production of cathelicidin upon bacterial contact," report the researchers. "25D3 is locally converted to 1,25D3 in bladder epithelial cells, binds to vitamin D receptor, which leads to synthesis of cathelicidin.

"The increased production in turn enhances the direct antibacterial effect on uropathogenic E. coli," they added.

An alternative to antibiotics

"In light of the emerging resistance to antibiotics used against UTI, new treatment strategies are needed," report the researchers. "Our data suggest that vitamin D can stimulate an increased production of the antimicrobial peptide cathelicidin. By inducing and activating cathelicidin with vitamin D, a local rather than a systemic effect can be achieved.

"This could offer selective and site-specific treatment of pathogens without perturbing commensal microbes elsewhere in the body."

Ginseng Extract May Offer Valuable Brain Protection,Neuro-Protective Support Ginsenosides, The Naturally-Occurring Phytonutrients From Ginseng Herbal Root Are Now Recognized As Being Beneficial For Cognitive and Mental Function, As Well As Protective Against Stroke...

An active protein found in ginseng root shows signs of neuroprotective support against stroke, and may benefit other neurodegenerative diseases, according to new research.

Published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, the study assessed the effects of Ginsenoside Rb1 (GRb1) an active protein component of the ginseng root, on a group of laboratory subjects one with ischemic stroke.

The research found that GRb1 significantly increased the number of neural stemcells (known as neural precursors cells) after ischemic stroke compared to the subjects not infused with GRb1.

"The present study demonstrates that GRb1 promotes the neural behavior recovery, and induces neurogenesis after cerebral ischemia," said the researchers from Tongji University School of Medicine in China.

"These results provide new support for the neuroprotective effects of GRb1 against ischemic stroke, which may be potential therapeutic treatment for otherneurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer disease and Parkinson disease," they added.

Ginseng Root

Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), has been an important component of Chinesemedicine for thousands of years, and is suggested to protect the brain from the effects of certain types of stroke.

Previous research has suggested that an the ginseng active component Ginsenoside Rb1(GRb1) has neuroprotective effects or for cerebral ischemia.

It has been suggested that there beneficial properties are due to their effects onbrain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) a protein that helps to support thesurvival of existing neurons, and encourages the growth and differentiation of newneurons and in the brain. Whilst other studies have linked levels of caspase- 3, aprotein that plays a vital role in programmed cell death and has been shown to be elevated levels after certain cardiovascular events.

"Recently, a battery of studies has shown that BDNF is strongly involved inneurological recovery after cerebral ischemia," said the researchers. However, they said that the underlying mechanism of this protective function is unclear.

"We assessed whether this neuroprotective effect of GRb1 was mediated by the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), by the levels of caspase-3proteins, and by induced neurogenesis in laboratory subjects following transient cerebral ischemia," explained the authors.

Study Details

The mechanism of GRb1 neuroprotection was evaluated by observing expressions of BDNF and caspase-3 and neurogenesis in subjects with experimental cerebral ischemia.

Results revealed the GRb1 infusion after cerebral ischemia significantly promoted recoveries of neurological functions at three and five days post-stroke compared to ischemic subjects not infused with GRb1.

They reported that BDNF levels were significantly increased in GRb1-treated subjects, whilst infusion with GRb1 post- stroke was shown to significantly reduce levels of caspase-3 compared to control subjects.

Mechanism

The researchers said that the findings of the study indicate that regulation ofthe expressions of BDNF and caspase-3 may be involved in GRb1-induced neuro protection against cerebral ischemia.

"GRb1 infusion after cerebral ischemia significantly inhibited caspase-3 activity atdifferent time points. This is, to our knowledge, the first report that GRb1 inhibits caspase-3 in cerebral ischemia," said the researchers.

"It is also the first time to show that GRb1 is capable of increasing BDNF expression after stroke... The increased BDNF expression may explain partly the neurological functional recovery after cerebral ischemia with GRb1 treatment," they added.

However they added that the underlying mechanism by which GRb1 promotes functional recovery after stroke is still not completely clear.

"Perhaps the most important questions in next study are to assess whether neuralprecursors cells differentiate into neurons with appropriate regional specificity after cerebral ischemia," they added.

They explained that if the new neurons are capable of long-term survival and integration, then GRb1-induced neurogenesis is a plausible strategy for many other neurodegenerative disorders besides cerebral ischemia.
