Welcome to my Mad Matatu Page!

Visit Mad Matatu's Blog!

Why did I choose this name? Well, Matatus are Minibuses that almost all Kenyans rely upon to get to their destinations! Each Matatu is always individually painted with bright colors and various designs from animals to Rap Icons like Nelly, 50 Cent and Tupac!

Each car even has it's own personal logo, like Haraka, Haraka, Haina Baraka; Hurry Hurry (speed) has no Blessings! The wonderful, colorful Matatu is well representative of the People of Kenya! Colorful and full of life (even if a lot of times you'll hear people cursing them for being such a nuisance to other drivers!!!) Oh, and if you suffer from Claustrophobia you'll probably hate the ride as you're usually packed into a Matatu like Sardines in a can!!

My Favorite Radio Station in Kenya! YOU CANNOT pass up the opportunity to listen to Kiss100FM because it's too cool and too funny!

About My Life....

I was born and raised in Kenya and lived there for 25 years before moving to the United States. Both my parents are Italian nationals who moved to east Africa during the 1950's. We have spent many a day at the local Markets and "kiosks" searching for those items which are both unusual and unique. One of the items you might find in my store is Batiks: an ancient art of drawing on fabric and then creating the design through a build up of colors. Wax is used to stop a particular color from seeping into another.

From the Top left: Me with a cheeky Colobus Monkey, Mount Kenya Safari Club

Me with former Kenyan President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, during the celebration of his niece's birthday, Nairobi National Park;

 One of Cape Ann's Harbors, where I live now. It's beautiful in the summer time!

My mother is passionate for flowers! This is an Agave in her garden in full bloom! The bloom looks like the neck of a swan and is sometimes called just that....

Center: My favorite beach in Watamu, North Coast! We discovered this beach by accident as there was only a small dirt road leading to it. Kenya's beaches are hidden jewels!;

Bottom Row: This is Morani, the most highly guarded Rhino in Kenya,. The Kenya Wildlife Service Ranger in the background lives with him 24/7 to ensure poachers don't get to him; ...

what's a ME page without a pet??? Here's my baby K Diddy. As you can see he loves to watch TV!!!

 Growing up in Kenya meant driving big 4x4's!!! lol! so I had to keep the tradition here, even if it meant winding through Gloucester's narrow streets!

This picture was taken right on the Equator. Notice the water jugs.... it's amazing but just a few inches from each point, north  and south of the Equator line, the water turned in opposite directions. While on the Equator, it just went straight down.....

Kenyan artists and craftsmen have really come a long way, experimenting and learning new techniques to improve their final products. Only a hand full have actually studied the arts. Most of their knowledge is either passed on by parents or is self-taught. I am more fond of older, more traditional art, as I feel it is much more pure and representative of Kenya and its wonderful people. My trustworthy mother, whom I rely on to bring you such wonderful, good quality Kenyan pieces, individually selects each item I sell. I don't sell something if I don't like it! My years of experience in Kenya allow me to ensure that you are getting nothing but the best!!!! Other items I sell include:

Stunning Beaded Sandals, which are 100% Handmade and incredibly stylish!

The essential KIKOI! They were a huge part of my life in Kenya! As a baby my nanny would use it as a sling to carry me while she worked; at school I used it as a picnic rug during my lunch breaks on the school lawn; as a teenager I used it obsessively at the beach as a Sarong, a mini Skirt, a Beach Towel and a Blanket on those nights when I would sit on the beach looking at the stars!

Other items include:

Batiks, Beaded Sandals, Dog Collars, Maasai Necklaces, Bracelets and Earrings.

 If I find something unusual I get it, so there's always new treasures to discover in my store!

So don't forget to come by my Store and check out my Items!!!!
