History
For centuries women have nurtured their
pregnancies around making their own personalized
baby layettes. As they watched their bodies grow
in creating life, they would knit, weave,
embroider, sew, smock, crochet, and bring into
life precious little outfits and blankets that
would softly embrace that tiny baby, clothing it
with love. This was done not only for their own
children, but for all close and dear.
With the advent of industrialization, modern
times arrived and women went to the workplace. No
longer was a precious little outfit created by an
expecting mother, now, she must join hands with
other women and copiously sew only one part of
what would become a "factory"
produced gownthe next part would be done
by the other employees. Therefore, clothing lost
its craft aspect, and became just another
massively produced consumer product,
Are these still made?
The items you will see in my store, although made recently,
reflect this nostalgic time when one would sit
down to weave a pair of booties or embroider a
guest towel. Every piece is made from start to
finish by the same artisan, then washed, pressed
and starched. Only the best fabrics (batiste,
linen) and threads are employed to guarantee
quality. These will definitely become treasured
heirlooms to your child, ones that she can keep
and use for her own children, just like I did
with mine!
The articles come from Brazil, where there are
still embroidering communities, much like
quilting is treated in the USA. The women use the
same techniques to create the Madeira, Battenburg
lace, smocking, and more, that were brought by
the Portuguese, Dutch, and Italian settlers
during the colonial period (17th and 18th
Centuries).
As with all 100% natural fabrics, these require
to be delicately washed and I would not advise to
use a drier. They also may need pressing,
although the starching is optional.
Will I
like it?
I am so sure you will be pleased with our linens and heirloom
baby clothes that I offer a 100% guarantee for
these items. Please contact me within 3 days of
receiving the item, and you will be issued a full
refund of your bid amount (minus shipping and
ebay fees), as soon as the item is returned to me
in the same condition.
Because these items are individually crafted, we
will not find two that are exactly alike, though
they may have the same design and colors.
Everyone is an unique gift, and they make
gorgeous keepsake shower presents.
Why
did I decide to bring these to the US?
When my son was born I had purchased several
layettes and blankets for him, and everywhere I
would go, people would inquire where to find
these beautiful gownsthus the idea was
born.
These items are only offered here on ebay,
specially for you. Please come on in and take
a peek at these treasures!
