I would
love to tell you about how we designed this business from the ground up
before launching it, but that was not the case. Frankly, our beginnings
are much more humble. I was in a pretty low place in
mid-2004. I was down to my last $400 and in an effort to
cover the rent, I sold my entire (very precious) DVD collection of
about 100 titles on eBay.
It was hard to part with many of these movies because of the emotional
attachment I had formed with them. Silly as that sounds, most people I
knew had the same attachments with movies or music of their own.
Once those initial movies were shipped (whew!), I decided to help other
people find the movies and music they love. After all the expenses were
covered of that initial sale, there was enough money left over to buy
some more titles and resell them. We started buying and
refurbishing personal entertainment (DVDs, CDs and Games) from people
selling their collections.
A few things have changed since then. Today, we ship over
40,000 titles per month all over the world. We (finally!)
moved out of my living room into a facility large enough to handle all
of that. Our staff has grown to more than 20 people,
too. And as of mid-2005, we started selling only new,
factory-sealed items including movies, music, games and
books.
We are a work in progress. We are still finding faster ways
to ship and we are always working on improving our customer
service. We just added a toll-free number and have plans to
add more people and improve our technology. We are proud to
ship our own titles and do our own customer service. We
don’t outsource our customer service overseas and we
don’t drop-ship, either. I believe we can offer a
better customer experience by keeping everything under the same roof.
