Modern Art Foundry Spring Gallery

MAF Staff Photo at Rockefeller Center, Bourgeois, "Maman"

Modern Art Foundry is a lost wax casting fine art foundry started by my Grandfather, John Spring, in 1932. My father Bob Spring, who turned 75 in 2007, headed the business from the early 1970’s and since 2000, my sister Mary Jo, and I have been running the day to day operations. We are located in Astoria, NY and part of our operations remains in the carriage house of the Steinway (piano makers) Mansion which was the first building my grandfather moved into 75 years ago. We began using the phrase “The Artist’s Foundry”, offering artists and communities the opportunity to cast their work under one roof and this is the service we strive to maintain today. From an art history perspective, it is often wondrous to remember all the artists that have passed through our doors and the spirit they shared with us, as well as the many sculptures we have cast. Our well trained craft persons and the thousands of sculptures we have made are too numerous to list but if you have a chance to visit New York City’s Central Park stop by Conservatory Lake to see the Alice and Wonderland Monument and Hans Christian Anderson Monument. If you are in Bilboa, Spain, go see the Bourgeois, Maman, at 30 feet tall, outside the Guggenheim.

Seeking to share the history and work of Modern Art Foundry with a wider audience, we entered the EBay market. In reading the introduction to Internet 101 for the Fine Artist by Constance Smith she writes, “My personal hope is that the Internet will enable those who might not otherwise have their voices heard. Perhaps then the art world will not be so controlled by the critics, historians, and gallery owners, but more by popular demand. Perhaps the general public will become more educated about art, incorporating more art into their lives. Surely this would be a revolution…” It is in this spirit that I welcome you into our store. Jeffrey Spring
