and sometimes I don't know what I want to be when I grow up...

Thoughts on Art and the Spirit...
It seems to me that there is a prevailing feeling of "emptiness" in our world, causing people to seek solace in having the most and the best of everything, and feeling that nothing is enough. It manifests in depression, rage, self destructive addictions and even violence. However, this void cannot be filled by tangible things or vented by negative emotions. I believe that this is an emptiness of the spirit, brought on by modern society's emphasis on the material, neglecting the spiritual side of our lives, an essential part of our vey humanity.
There are many ways to satisfy this emptiness of spirit, and one of them that many people are not conscious of is that of creative self expression. The "making of art" in its many forms, bears an innate spirituality that many people are totally unaware of. The act of expressing oneself in dance, music, visual art, drama or the written or spoken word, has a liberating effect on the deepest emotional level.
Unfortunately, it is often only the young who are encouraged to express themselves in these ways. By the time we become adults, we are either too busy being "grown up" or too inhibited due to someone (or many people) laughing or making jokes, or saying "you can't, you're no good, you have no talent" We don't say these things about ourselves as children, we have to learn them along the way. But if we only stop listening to those "little voices" for a short while, and give ourselves permission to go ahead and do it even if it isn't any good! You will notice, I haven't said anything about the art having to be "good" it just has to be.
So what are you waiting for?
Go out, take a dance class, or just turn on some music and groove in your living room! Or pick up some chalk and draw on the sidewalk. Sing in the shower. Grab a drum and run to the next drum circle. Take up a craft that interests you. Sit down with a pencil and try your hand at poetry. Just go ahead and do it! If you don't want to, you don't need to share it with anyone else. But it really can be a lot of fun with the support of a group, too!
