ANTIQUE HUNTING

My wife and I have had a Mom and Pop frame shop since October of 1979... I grew up four houses away from a neighborhood grocery store. We bought the old store building and remodeled it into a custom picture frame shop on the first floor and living quarters on the second and third floor.

We have been collecting antiques over 25 years. The house filled up and I was still addicted to buying, so in 1991 I joined an antique mall to sell the overflow. 15 years later I gave up on the malls and went strictly ebay. All too often I would think I knew what something was worth but when I would put the item on ebay instead of the antique shop all too often I would get some price far beyond what I would have priced it for sale in the antique shop. For example... below is a chair made out of horseshoes and a tractor seat... I photographed it with our new Pom puppy “Flitter” and it brought an amazing $975.00 on ebay!

As most of you know, ebay is kind of a hit and miss thing. I bought the little snowmobile (pictured below) for $100.00 and thought I would try my luck selling it on ebay and since 1 dog in the picture worked so well last time I thought 2 dogs in the picture would be twice as good... It got no bids, but I got a great picture out of the deal... (The dogs would fight over who got to drive, so my wife and I took it away from them.)

The main thing I collect is antique wind up phonographs. In 1998 I was waiting in line at the phonograph convention ( just outside of Chicago) and overheard many conversations about ebay. One collector told of a $400.00 Amberola 30 phonograph that sold for $1,100.00 on ebay! It was then I decided to learn how to use a computer and see what this ebay thing was all about. I joined ebay November of that year. It has been a lot of fun!

Here is a photo of my first computer...

Below is a photo of my new “Super Computer” that I use to do all my ebay listing... It has 2 old drive-in-movie speakers for sound, a clear case with lights inside, a 1920 typewriter and 36 Plymouth hood ornament and rotating lights on top. The blue letters on the clear keyboard wore off, so I cut the key tops off a rusty 1920's typewriter and glued them on to the computer keys.

Just think how far we have come...

I completed my phonograph collecting goal, ( The Victors I through VI all with original wood horns and the Edison Standard through Opera and the odd spindle size phonographs) so I started a small phonograph museum in the frame shop.




Ahh... the good old days...

I have about 3,000 records in my basement and they take up shelves from floor to ceiling on a 28 foot wall. It is amazing to think that today we can fit that wall of thousands of songs in a tiny thing you can put in your pocket! ..
