Obviously, photography is one of my passions. In the beginning, as I endured the difficulties of learning how to see (and the laws of physics, as related to optics), and how to make quality photographs (and all the bewildering interrelationships of focus, exposure, and light), I often wished someone, somewhere, could simply explain things to me in an understandable manner. Oh, I plodded through the classes, books, videos, and courses, until I finally figured out how to do it - but it wasn't easy, believe me. It occurred to me, however, that others might have also tried to learn the photographic skills... and had encountered the same difficulties and frustrations as I had. Consequently, I have tried to post online some information which, hopefully, may help those poor, struggling, souls, who, like myself, have had to face the difficulties of learning a complex, but highly rewarding, skill such as photography. But unlike the standard courses, to do so in a direct and easily understood manner. You don't have to study (and suffer) for 20 years just to learn how to make good pictures - and I'll help you learn how, too. Another aspect of this complicated but amazingly rewarding hobby/profession that really annoyed me was the high prices for photographic equipment (especially photographic lighting equipment)! I almost gave up on photography when I discovered how much I couldn't afford (I said "almost")! Sure, many of these items are worth their cost, but not everyone can afford a Ferrari for their first car! So I began checking around to discover the best possible prices on good quality photographic supplies. And you know what? I found some great stuff, for really fabulous prices! Consequently, I have taken it upon myself to try to make as much of this good quality, low cost photographic equipment available to my fellow struggling photographers (us struggling photogs have to stick together, y'know; and all of us are always struggling - struggling to make that elusive "perfect" image, huh?). Anyway, I figured I'd do everything I possibly could to make sure everyone who wanted to make great photographs and/or videos could find decent equipment at a reasonable price (and, of course, I add on a very small profit to cover my time and efforts; but I guarantee you it's a LOT less than the usual distributors of photographic equipment add!). Perhaps the most important equipment any photographer can own (after the camera, of course:) is photographic lighting equipment (either strobes - flash units - for film cameras or continuous lighting equipment for digital and video lighting). After all, the word "photographer" itself (from Greek) actually means Light Writer, or "one who writes with light." The term is meaningful because those of us who make photographs are slaves to light. Light is both our nemesis and our salvation (when we can control the light). Without the right types of lighting equipment, we can never progress to professional level studio pictures. Or location pictures. Sure, we can make beautiful photos with available light... when the light's just right, at the exact time we need it, and at exact place we need it, if it's not raining, if it's not snowing, if it's not too cold, if it's not too hot, if it's not too dark, if everyone we need to make the photographs are available at the exact time the light's just right for our needs, under all the right conditions.... beginning to see now? When we can control the light, we can make the best photographs. And sometimes, just sometimes, when we set the lights just right, we get a perfect photograph. Getting back to "Perfect Photographs," how do we make one? What does it look like? The only answer is to keep making pictures until we get closer and closer. The "perfect" photograph, as with all great works of art, is impossible to define - but immediately recognizable, nonetheless! We can't tell you what it should look like, but when we see it, we'll know it. The struggle to make these kinds of images is the intangible aspect that separates those of us who struggle to "make" photographs, from those of us who just "take" snapshots (there's nothing wrong with "taking" pictures, that's how all of the world's greatest photographers started out; but at a certain point in their photographic lives, something urged them on to learn more, and to progress from "takers" of snapshots, to "makers" of works of art). Whatever that aspect of our hearts and souls is, wherever that urge to improve comes from, we know not. But when it moves us, we "need" to create something more. Something better.
