About the March of Dimes: History
In
1938, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt created The March
of Dimes to defeat polio. With the assistance of millions
of volunteers, including the courageous Polio Pioneers who
participated in the polio vaccine field trials of 1954 and
1955, the March of Dimes won the battle against polio -- funding
ground-breaking research by Dr. Jonas Salk that produced the
first safe & effective vaccine for polio.
About the March of Dimes: Current Mission
- Continuing FDR's vision of a world in which children live
without fear of disease, the March of Dimes works today
to improve the health of babies through prevention of birth
defects and infant mortality. Research, Education, Community
Service, and Advocacy are the cornerstones of our mission.
Here are some quick facts:
- As a non-profit foundation (501c3), The March of Dimes
maintains a vigorous research grant program, annually investing
many tens of millions of dollars in leading-edge biomedical
research conducted by the scientists at the finest academic
health centers in the nation.
- Three million volunteers and 1500 staff in 54 Chapters
across the United States work everyday to ensure a healthy
start to life for the nation's children.
- In recent years, the March of Dimes Folic Acid campaign
has helped to greatly diminish the incidence of neural tube
defects (Spina Bifida) in newborns.
- Commencing in 2003, The March of Dimes has embarked on
a five-year campaign to reduce the growing rate of premature
birth in the United States, which now impacts one in eight
births.
