i don't know what it is about 1890-1920, but people were a lot more creative back then, before we ruined everything. back then, halloween was a time of pumpkins with bat wings and fruit with faces, of gourdmen and laughing devils. when getting your photograph taken meant wearing your nicest corset and letting your six-foot- long hair hang down, while you hold hands with your midget friends. and when you die, they'll braid your hair into flowers and wear it for a year. i love everything from that time period, from photographs and postcards to clothing and art, and of course most of all i love decadent-era literature, turn of the century supernatural and weird fantasy stories.
I began painting when I was 12, in 1986, and over the years I've experimented with fantasy, surreal and abstract themes in my paintings, as well as occasional portraiture. Right now what I enjoy the most is whimsical fantasy art, especially on Halloween themes. I'm inspired by vintage Halloween postcards, and most of my current paintings feature witches or fairies in a wide variety of settings, from dark gothic forests to castles to icy landscapes, candyland dream worlds and psychedelic fantasy lands. I am self-taught, and although I normally use acrylics I have worked with acrylics and pen and ink in the past as well.
