My first commissioned scrimshaw by Joe Cocke 1981
My name is Douglass Moody. I reside in Long Beach CA. I obtained my first Sperm whale tooth in 1971 while station in Iceland with the U.S. Navy. I commissioned my first scrimshaw in 1981 onto one of these large teeth. My oldest scrimshaw is circa 1830, and my most recent is currently being scrim'ed as you read this! I continue to support scrimshanders by commissioning scrimwork onto my raw whale teeth, and then write & illustrate Artist Profiles for our collective Scrimshaw Collectors' website: www.ScrimshawCollectors.com. I have also placed several photos & scans of antique, vintage, & contemporary scrim'ed whale teeth in the Gallery pages of this website. I have written four "How To" articles also on this site. Recently, several collectors started an eBay Community group called Scrimshaw Collectors Discussion Group. I invite all enterested parties to take a look. Go to http://groups.ebay.com/forum.jspa?forumID=100035988. You may have to sign-in again to Groups. Read our summary description. For novice and experienced collectors & scrimshanders alike. Anyone may join, and all may participate. Please e-mail to me at ScrimCollector@aol.com to answer any questions, or for more information on any scrimshaw-related subject.
Much of my collection can be viewed on the WorthPoint website, as well as several articles about collecting and care of scrimshaw: www.worthpoint.com/worthpoint-worthologists/douglass-moody |
