READY - SET - SNIPE !
|
Bid sniping is the act of placing one’s ONLY bid for the MAXIMUM amount as LATE as possible before the end of the auction.
My all time favorite sniping statement came from a fellow eBayer, who is now also my good friend: In 1998 - in the dark ages of AOL on dial-up connection - I watched her win two of my auctions in the span three minutes, each with three or four seconds to spare, snatching them away from a couple of nibblers, who had been battling each other in "leapfrog" fashion for several days. In my "Congratulations - You Won" e-mail, I commented on her sniping skill and received a one sentence reply: "I learned it from my cats: patience — and a quick paw".
As a seller, I LOVE snipers. They are serious bidders, who come in prepared to offer their highest amount, because they know that there will be no other chance.
As a bidder, I love to snipe, because I bid to win (and hope for a bargain) — while a tentative bidder "nibbles" for a bargain and hopes to win, and will frequently accomplish neither.
