TREK Buffalo NY to Port Sanilac MI
John has worked with Teens over 7 years in their Residential treatment programs. As a family we do delinquent foster care. Our previous boat a Catalina 36 was used to do sailing TREK with the kids from Teen Ranch and our foster children. We would go on 5 day trips, but due to the size of the boat be forced to tent on islands with the residential youth. Last year we bought a 1993 Beneteau 510 ROWN ROYALout of the charter fleet in the B.V.I.. This boat will allow us to sleep every on board. Before we could leave the Caribbean last spring we had to do many costly repairs and updates. We left May 15 2004 in 40 knots of wind and made it to Bermuda in less than 5 days. A day of rest and off to the US. Blew out our old tired sails in a storm 150 mile off shore, but with storm sail up made it back safely. We brought the boat to Buffalo and did our first TREK on the new boat, to Port Sanilac Michigan in 5 days. The summer was spent repairing and updating. We still have a lot more to do on the boat this year but our funds are low so it will take longer to do. We had several week long TREKS in 2005 for the residential youth. They went GREAT. We plan on doing many more in the years to come. We have now started SonRay Youth & Family, Inc. A newly formed corporation to provide care and therapeutic help which respects the individual needs of children, adolescents and families. The emphasis is on nurturing spiritual and emotional growth for a more positive, healthy individual, family and community. Our first project planned is to open up a residential home for abused and neglected boys (state kids, orphans). Please keep us in your prayers, we have a long way to go and we need all the help we can get.
The boys enjoyed the trips and several made commitments. This has channged their lives. We are looking for some safety equipment, like life rafts, ERIBP and would like to upgrade our current equipment. We have started a online store to help fund our work with it profits, youth work does not pay much as far as money but the rewards are great.
