Michael Dawes (squiresgate) : collector of airline timetables

about me

I acquired my first airline timetable in 1967, and they have just kept coming in ever since! I collect representative examples from all airlines and all eras, worldwide, but with particular emphasis on my own home country of Great Britain. With a collection now numbering tens of thousands of different timetables, inevitably I've acquired duplicates along the way. As space becomes ever more at a premium, I'm now, from time to time, offering through eBay a variety of duplicate timetables, and other surplus airline ephemera, which I hope can give pleasure to other collectors.

why squiresgate?

There is a reason! On open land at the edge of the Lancashire coastal town where I lived for more than twenty-five years, and adjacent to the neighbouring holiday resort of Blackpool, was held, in October 1909, the first ever Aviation Meeting in Great Britain. Flying was new and sensational, and huge crowds turned out to see the spectacle of pioneer aviators struggling to control their primitive machines around a 2.5 mile circuit. The area of the flying ground was, and is, known as Squire's Gate, as here once stood the entrance to the estates of the Clifton family, Lords of the ancient Manor of Lytham. Squire's Gate subsequently became a regular aerodrome, and in due course Blackpool Airport, a role it still fills today. Just across the road, from the adjacent Blackpool South Shore beach, the first-ever scheduled air service in Great Britain began in May 1919, flying the 40 miles to Manchester with A.V. Roe's 2-passenger Avro 504 biplanes. And no, sadly, I don't have an original timetable, but would love to hear from anyone who has! However, I believe it likely the only timetable published was that which appeared as an announcement in the local newspaper.
